Sylvester Croom probably isn’t ready yet to refer to true freshman quarterback Wesley Carroll as one of the assets of his Mississippi State offense. But on the plus side, Carroll isn’t a liability anymore, either.
That might have been the case when Carroll was thrust into the starting lineup in the Bulldogs’ fourth game of the season, against Division I-AA Gardner-Webb. It might have been the case, too, when he was pretty much a non-factor in that game and lost his job to Josh Riddell for MSU’s loss to South Carolina the following week.

It might even have been true when Carroll returned to the lineup against Alabama-Birmingham.
Now, though, after three starts and a solid performance in last week’s 33-21 loss to Tennessee, Carroll no longer is as much a liability as he is a steady contributor. He will start for the third week in a row Saturday when the Bulldogs (4-3) play No. 9 West Virginia (5-1) at Mountaineer Field.
“Wes is playing well. That was probably his best game to this point,’’ Croom said, referring to Carroll’s 18-of-33, 203-yard, two-touchdown passing performance against the Vols. “The biggest thing is I thought his composure was excellent through the course of the ballgame.
“He’s our starting quarterback right now and as far as I’m concerned he is the guy. He’s carried us through up to this point and he’s played well. I’m not worried about past this week. I haven’t even thought past this week.’’
