Nats to play O's to test new stadium

The ballpark being built for the Washington Nationals will host a dress rehearsal March 29 - an exhibition game against the Orioles.

The Nationals want to find out whether they will be able to use the new stadium for real the next day.

Nationals president Stan Kasten said yesterday that the team is awaiting word from the commissioner's office on whether the first regular-season game at Nationals Park will be played March 30 or April 7.

"We're ready to go either way," Kasten said.

"In the back of your mind, you're aware there are acts of God that aren't predictable. ... Other than that kind of stuff, I don't see anything derailing us."

Grass has been placed on the field over the past two weeks, and the bases and the pitching rubber were in place yesterday, when Mayor Adrian M. Fenty toured the $611 million ballpark.

Tickets won't be sold for the exhibition game against the Orioles. Instead, people with season-ticket packages will be admitted for free and other tickets will be given away, perhaps to stadium workers or city schoolchildren.

Kasten said the Nationals will mail information on seat relocations Friday to fans who had season tickets at RFK Stadium, where the team played the past three years after moving from Montreal.

Sales of single-game tickets will begin in late February.
