| | Comments (3)

LIVE BLOGGING - Another Reason to Love College Hoops on MASN!

Strong win for the Hoyas as they easily defeated Radford 110-51 Saturday night at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. Behind 21 from Austin Freeman and 17 from DaJuan Summers, the Hoyas move to 8-0 and will certainly be looking ahead to their next game at #2 Memphis next week.

Thanks for tuning it tonight! Hope you had fun...stay tuned to MASNsports.com to figure out when we're doing our next live BlogCast!

Georgetown Hoyas Basketball

2:00 left Bryon Jansen checks in... The former practice squad player and walk-on checks into the game. Seeing action in his 3rd collegiate game. Fans went nuts. They were chanting for him to check in. Hoyas up 106-49... Last time Hoyas scored 100 in regulation was 2001-02... 103 points in a win at home vs Grambling...

5:10 left 100-47 Gtown after a huge slam from DaJuan Summers, Who is having a huge game...Hoyas up huge--fans loving the 100-pt mark. Let me breath. Wow. Im working up an appetite w/ all this typing. I could go for some chicken or something. No more Skittles...

Hoyas topple 40-point mark! Hoyas up 87-46... The last time the Hoyas won a game by 40 or more was December 16, 2006 vs Winston-Salem State (76-32)

Roy Hibbert has 7 points on 3-3 FG shooting...all in the 2nd half. John Thompson has gone 10 deep on his bench and is continuing the rotation throughout the game. The Hoya bench has been tremendous. Austin Freeman has 17 at last count and seems to be the spark off the bench that the Hoyas seem to get every night. The Hoya bulldog just ate a box with the name "Radford" written on it. That is just sweet. I might get a picture of that bulldog for my bedroom. Don't think the wife would like that very much.

A few random thoughts from Hoyas fans around me:

80-42 with 9:42 left

"Hibbert isn't doing enough--but the young guys are playing really tough. Go Hoyas!!!"
- Naomi

"Radford doesn't know how to keep up with us!!"
- Jeffrey

"We are sick! Send anyone here, we'll beat em like pudding."
- J.J.

Just for the record, I didn't know pudding got beat....Who knew?

11:09 left in 2nd half - Hope you all out there in computer land are enjoying the blog...Hoyas seem to really be focused and determined to win this game. The score is reflecting that and the Hoyas are playing "scary good." 77-40 behind huge dunks, 3ptrs and a running offense.

15:25 left in half - Hibbert seems to be much more involved in the 2nd half--- very vital part of this offense and he's not producing how you expect a 7'2" All-American to vs. an undersized Radford team. Hoyas up 63-36

16:40 left in 2nd Patrick Ewing Jr looks like a man on a mission. He send a beautiful entry pass to Roy Hibbert who returned the favor on a huge give-and-go. Hibbert finally got on the score sheet with a nice bucket. 61-32 Hoyas

Looking ahead to the 2nd half...

Mark Tillmon said that the Hoyas did what they wanted to do..."got off to a great start and thats what Coach Thompson wanted to see." He also mentioned that the Hoyas were the ones setting the tempo--and thats what they wanted.

Jason Knapp mentioned that Macklin and Hibbert aren't really getting offensive touches and that certainly has to be a second half focus as they prepare for their next game against #2 superpower Memphis.

Halftime numbers Austin Freeman, Jessie Sapp and DaJuan Summers all have 10...Jonathan Wallace has 8, Patrick Ewing has 7 and Roy Hibbert has 0. Seriously 0.

Amir Johnson leads the Highlanders with 8...

End of 1st half...Ridiculous decision by a Radford player to challenge a desperation 3-ptr by Austin Freeman at the buzzer. Freeman nails all 3 free throws to give Gtown a 52-28 lead at the half...I need to go get some more Skittles.

39 seconds left: Wow...stuff getting chippy here...Just had a little bit of a rumble in the paint. #24 Kenny Thomas (a junior) was getting into it with senior Tyler Crawford and freshman Chris Wright. No techs called...which seems weird...One of the Gtown players seemed to leave the bench for a second trying to get involved in the festivities.

:54 seconds left in 1st half - Play has certainly settled down. I think both teams were hyperventilating there. Patrick Ewing Jr just got "T'd" up for running his mouth to an official. I didn't hear what he said...then again, I dont know if I would type it if I did hear it. Halfcourt offenses for both teams are somewhat stagnant. The points seem to be coming when the two teams run. Fans are getting on the refs for a few chippy fouls being called. Not much to complain about though when your up 25...Radford freshman Nick McFarlin just checked into the game... 6'7", 217 lbs as a freshman...big boy. Looks like he should be playing football. 49-24

5:02 left in 1st half - JT3 Making some huge changes in the starting 5--how about all 5. He's going to a young lineup...the Hoyas are up 30..so I guess that makes some sense. They do look they are having some fun out there. Every single Radford shot is heavily contested and they are having a tough time getting open. 47-19 Hoyas

7:37 left in 1st half - A Junior student here at Gtown (not on the team) named Ed just hit a 3 pointer (after airballing a free throw) during a timeout to win $225 bucks. Not bad. Seems like everyone is hitting threes. Patrick Ewing Jr just threw down a huge dunk on a rebound putback. Place went nuts. Speaking of nuts, I could use some Planters right now--that would certainly be delicious. Although the Hoyas are up big, they aren't really getting alot from Hibbert. The game seems to be going through him, but then he distributes for the big 3...I guess not really a stat stuffer kinda night for the big man, but he's certainly helping his team dominate. 38-14. Jonathan Wallace has 8...Jessie Sapp has 8...DaJuan Summers has 7...

12:08 left in first half - Chris Wright is on the floor..the freshman from Bowie, Md. --so are sophomores Jeremiah Rivers and Vernon Macklin. Not exactly the '27 Yankees, but they are playing pretty fast and strong...You know John Thompson III is trying to get these kids some good experience in crazy atmospheres to see what they are made of. 22-8 Hoyas... Tyler Crawford hit a jumper in the corner...

15:45 left in 1st half...that is one of those "you gotta get a timeout moments." Jessie Sapp just nailed a 3-and the Hoyas have drained 3 threes en route to an early 18-3 lead. Sapp has 5, Wallace has 5...Hoyas look dominant early. Radford is a lot more athletic than one would anticipate. 18-5 now...

Game is underway.. Hoyas look excited and fast.. Jonathan Wallace (6'1") vs Amir Johnson (5'9") is going to be a great matchup...they look super quick against another. Gtown is playing the 2-3 zone...but they find each other matched up alot...

Wallace nailed a 3 for the first points of the game. Summers answered w/ another 3 on the next Hoyas possession. Johnson nailed a 3 over Wallace. Wallace penetrated for another layin. 8-3 Hoyas early...

4:00 til tipoff...
Cheerleaders are staying busy jumping around...place is completely packed. People are still coming in, but I have no idea where they are gonna sit. All the Hoya fans are wearing gray-colored T-shirts that say "We Are Georgetown." Where is Matthew McConaughey when you need him? (We are Marshall reference). The fans are chanting "LETS GO HOYAS" alot. Alot. Now they are chanting "WHERE IS RADFORD, WHERE IS RADFORD."

A fan I just talked to said, "Man, I wish they could play every game here. I love this place." I dont think the Georgetown coffers would like that very much--they can only sell like 1000 tickets.

7:12 - (under 20 minutes 'til tip-off): The soda is/was delicious. I got some skittles too..
Hoyas took the floor to a huge roar...About 4/5 of the crowd is pro-Gtown...There is a strong Radford contingent clad in Red though. The Hoya bulldog is out in the lobby barking at people. He or she (I didn't venture a look) has kinda a weak bark. It's more like a yelp. Haven't seen the Radford Highlander mascot--then again, what would I be looking for?

6:45 - Just talked to the MASN broadcast team (Jason Knapp and former G'town standout Mark Tillmon) about tonights game...A few thoughts:

For Radford:They want "to execute and not waste possessions" & they're going to try and keep the Hoyas off the glass and limit them to one shot.

For Georgetown:
They want to rebound well and also be conscious of Amir Johnson, Radford's shifty guard. The sophomore guard is 5'9" and is averaging 12.4 PPG (he's from Pittsburgh).

One of the other things to note here is the gym itself. In a place as small as this (this is where G'town practices normally), a team like Radford might benefit. They are used to playing in smaller venues, whereas the Hoyas are used to 5000+ seat stadiums. Knapp mentioned that the Hoyas have "strugged" here before (last year vs ODU they lost here)...so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I'm going to get a soda. It could be delicious.

6:30 PM - It's showtime!! We're here....and we're loving McDonough Arena. The quaint, distinct building on the Georgetown campus is buzzing tonight as the Hoyas entertain the visiting Highlanders of Radford. The place is sold out and Roy Hibbert looks like he doesn't belong here (he's too tall and too big to be playing against these kids from Radford). I'll have some thoughts from the MASN broadcast team tonight in a few minutes....
