Sapp Keys Hoyas to 19th Straight at Verizon, 73-53
| | Comments (0)

The Georgetown Hoyas moved to 22-4 (12-4 in the BIG EAST) with an impressive, 73-53 win vs. the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday at Verizon Center. Junior guard Jessie Sapp finished with 16 points on 4-7 shooting.

LIVE BLOGGING - Another Reason to Love College Hoops on MASN!

Final: Jansen gets on the boxscore...fouls BELTON on the 3...guess how many 3ptrs BELTON has attempted this season? You guessed it-- "0"...Smart move...not so much... Crawford gets to the line to try and get some pts too... missed both. Jansen trying to get that rebound: knocks it OB.

Thanks for checking in at the blog today...had a great time with it...Stay tuned for much more from MASNSPORTS.com!

2:11 left, 2nd half - Omar Wattad and Bryon Jansen just checked into the game...that tells you enough...71-46 Hoyas

wallace9.jpg

3:52 left, 2nd half - This is getting as ugly as you would expect it to... The Hoyas are bringing in the bench. The Hoyas are shooting 46 percent as a team and are just playing smart basketball...Here are 2 stats you should hear:

1). Roy Hibbert has 1 foul. Seriously. How many big men can play 32 minutes and have just 1 foul.

2). Cincy has turned over the ball 16 times and has blocked 0 shots....The Hoyas have turned it over just 8 times and have 6 blocks... 66-45 Hoyas

5:30 left, 2nd half - The Hoyas are gunning at this point. Up 20...Freeman with 13...Sapp with 12...Summers with 10...Update: the chippy-ness seems to have subsided and the teams are just playing some oldfashioned hoops...59-41 Hoyas

8:36 left, 2nd half - To be honest, its been rather stagnant back-and-forth down the court. The Bearcats continue to pressure the ball and force a Hoya turnover once in a while...but for the most part, the Hoyas are handling the pressure and adding to their offensive totals. 53-39 Hoyas...

13:50, 2nd half - Rivers just brought the house down...Seriously...steal and dunk for him and he's only 6'4"...The Hoyas are opening up the offense quite a bit...Hibbert a beautiful up and under to open up the lead to 15...Hibbert has 6

15:07 left, 2nd half - Hibbert has 5 blocks now...It completely changes the complexion of the game when you have a guy like that in the paint...the Bearcats are just completely isolated when they can't penetrate..41-31 Hoyas

15:51 left, 2nd half - After a runner inside by Warren, Hibbert answered with a soft hook in the lane...Then during the timeout things got a little chippy between Tyler Crawford and a few guys on the Bearcats... 41-31 Hoyas

16:30 left, 2nd half - Cold shooting to start the half, the Hoyas missing twice, and the Bearcats getting their first points on another Williamson tip-back...He's got 11. The lead is down to 5...Sapp hit a 3 in transition to get the squad on the scoresheet. Pretty cut by Freeman inside for 2...39-29 Hoyas

HALFTIME - Deonta Vaughn is catching fire...which is not good for the Hoyas. He just nailed back to back 3's to give him 10 points in the game and cut the lead to 7...Hibbert just missed a layup inside. Summers answered next possession inside. 34-25 at the half...

sapp.jpg

2:19 left, 1st half - Sapp nailed 2 more, Hoyas up 12.. Hard foul on penetration by Ewing Jr...you hope it wouldn't get chippy--but as I said, its a Big East game...so anything can happen. 32-18 Hoyas

4:08 left, 1st half - Vaughn finally got on the scoresheet with a nice 3...Austin Freeman answered back with a nice leaner in penetration. You don't really see any firepower from Cincy (at least not enough to come back from 11 down). Hibbert just missed a huge dunk inside...then hit a nice hook...13 pt lead for the squad. 29-16 Hoyas

6:17 left, 1st half - The Hoyas have opened up an 8-point lead behind strong defense and smart decisions. Austin Freeman has 7 and the Hoyas are playing swith some intensity. Williamson nailed a jumper... Wallace answered with a 3 of his own...big time shot. Summers just nailed a leaner in the lane and the foul... 24-13 Hoyas

9:04 left, 1st half - Rivers got caught in another trap, but they Hoyas grabbed it right back and Rivers nailed 2 free throws...seriously feels like a Big East game...fouls, free throws, steals, more fouls...Sapp just nailed a 3 to open up the Hoya lead to 6... Williamson is back at the line again... he's 4-5 there...Hibbert has about 4 blocks now by the way...15-11 Hoyas

11:11 left, 1st half - Check out this rotation... Tyler Crawford, Patrick Ewing Hr, Jeremiah Rivers, Jonathan Wallace and Vernon Macklin...1 starter...The Bearcats are leaving Crawford open to do whatever he wants. Deonta Vaughn, Cincy's best player just laced a beautiful pass inside to John Williamson...he was fouled..made them both. Fullcourt press just got Rivers caught. Williamson just nailed 2 more inside...here come the big boys back into the game...10-9 Hoyas

12:56 left, 1st half - I guess Rivers is fine... He's in the game now. Austin Freeman is fine too...he just bombed a 3 from the wing... Roy juist picked up a great block, dove on the floor and grabbed the loose ball. Hibbert then just blocked Bishop again...Wallace answers with a 3...WOW. That was quick... 10-4 Hoyas...

15:03 left, 1st half - Freeman off-glass for 2...I will say this: Hibbert hasn't touched the ball in the paint yet. I think he has 2 touches and they both are way outside the key. Not what you want. Just as I was typing that, Hibbert gets fouled inside for 2 shots. They have to go inside to him. 4-4

16:37 left, 1st half - The Bearcats are playing a swarming, fullcourt press that seems to be frustrating your Hoyas. They are breaking the press, but it's taking them awhile to set up their halfcourt offense. 4-2 Cincy

18:00 left, 1st half - Freeman picked up a quick foul inside and the Bearcats nailed 2 free throws...that's going to be a big part of this game. The Hoyas have struggled mightily with their work from the charity stripe, whereas the Bearcats are shooting 66.7 percent for the season. 2-0 Bearcats

Tip-off: Ted Leonsis just showed up with his family to sit courtside. In case you don't know...he's kind of a big deal. Owns the Capitals and a minority ownership in the Wizards and Verizon Center. Most people think and know that he will take over this place once Abe Pollin passes. Not trying to foreshadow anything horrible, but he has been in declining health for awhile...

5:00 until tipoff:
Starting lineups: (Georgetown) Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, Hibbert
Starting lineups: (Cincinnati) Gentry, Vaughn, Davis, Hrycaniuk, Williamson

ewing warm.jpg

11:45 The Bearcats are super-relaxed. They are joking around and messing with each other in their warmups...The ringleader appears to be the aforementioned John Williamson. Maybe that's a good sign for them--I dont know.

11:30 - Just an interesting note: this is the first time ever that Cincinnati is 3 games over .500 in Big East play since joining the conference. Not that it will change what happens in the game...but the players definitely know this is an important game.

11:15: The fans are brutal. They are all over Cincy's senior forward John Williamson. First of all, Williamson is 6'6", 245 lbs...so I dont know why they are messing w/ him--but they are. Every time he shoots the fans yell "JOHN--YOUR NOT GOING TO MAKE THE NBA!". Tough. Williamson isn't even their best player (that would be Deonta Vaughn)...but we'lll see. They are also yelling..."its big east basketball and you guys arent ready!"

10:50: Yeah, so we are here a little early...you upset? Big news on the MASN front: some lax for you this afternoon. So get out your dirty white hat, your lacrosse shorts and about 4 collared shirts and have a blast this afternoon! Haha... Anyways...The Hoyas and Bearcats are on the floor shooting around and hanging out. Its amazing how relaxed they are right now, but in an hour they are all game. Jeremiah Rivers came onto the court and grabbed his hamstring immediately. Not good. I'll check into that. Previews and other stuff to come...
