Hoyas Cruise to 16th Straight Home Win, 73-61
| | Comments (1)

LIVE BLOGGING - Another Reason to Love College Hoops on MASN!

The Hoyas continued their home dominance (16 straight now at Verizon and 10 straight vs BIG EAST opponents) with a 73-61 win over Seton Hall, who snaps their 5-game win streak in the process. Jessie Sapp finished with 17 and Hibbert and Ewing had 16. Brian Laing led all scorers with 24.

Thanks, as always, for reading the blog...Stay tuned for our next game blog Tuesday night vs. South Florida...

:42.1 left, 2nd half - Freeman just added 2 more inside and the Hoyas are basically suffocating the Pirates defensively Seton Hall is shooting just 34% on 16-46 shooting. They have such big bodies inside that it becomes almost impossible to get a strong look inside. 68-57 Hoyas

2:44 left, 2nd half - Patrick Ewing Jr is stepping up here late in the 2nd half...he started on the bench and certainly looks fresh. He's got 14 points and just forced a SHU turnover with nice defensive position in the lane (to force the offensive foul). 61-48 Hoyas...(A 13 point lead that seems unlikely--its been so much closer than that).

3:36 left, 2nd half -Jeremiah Rivers just had a chance at an easy layin and missed it...but on the next Hoya possession, Ewing Jr rattled the rim with a strong dunk. He certainly can glide ... 59-48 Hoyas

4:20 left, 2nd half- Great, great back and forth action...First, Brian Laing put in 2 more...he's got 20...The thing about him too is that he is sooo fiery. He cares--he's going nuts urging his team to play to his level. Then Austin Freeman just answered with a great alley-oop layin to bring the Hoya lead to 9...Pirates answered 55-48

6:00 left, 2nd half - Hibbert just put back 2 more inside (he's got 14), but Harvey answered with a pretty floater over Hibbert's outstretched arms...This is a classic back-and-forth battle. Freeman just got fouled inside and made both free throws...51-44 Hoyas...

7:30 left, 2nd half - Laing just got his 3rd foul...he's a smart player though...don't think he's going to foul out. Bobby G just told him to use his head and not pick up #4...Just to give you an idea of how chippy the 2nd half has been...There are already 17 fouls combined in this hald.. There were 19 in the entire 1st half... Laing has 18...47-42 Hoyas...

freeman.jpg

9:30 left, 2nd half - Vernon Macklin just put back a thunderous dunk and Austin Freeman made a great strip on a Seton Hall fastbreak. Patrick Ewing Jr just crushed a cameraman...right near me...made me scared for a second. Hoyas up 45-38

11:20 left, 2nd half - Seton Hall on a serious run. Hazell nailed a jumper and Laing is on fire w/ 16 pts... They've cut it a 4 point lead with a full court press and a strong outside presence. Hoyas depth is getting tested too with the fouls adding up.

12:37 left, 2nd half - Stop me if you've heard this one: Laing scores, foul for a Hoya guard. Rivers just picked up his 4th and Laing scored again. He's got 14 and he doesn't appear to be slowing down. As a side note: the Chick-Fil-A "Shake Cam" just happened in the commerical break. Basically, everyone just dances: some beautiful work on the dancing...two middle-aged men won...it was worth the price of admission alone. 42-33 Hoyas

14:03 left, 2nd half - Jessie Sapp just hit a 3 from the wing to give the Hoyas a 12-point lead. Then Jonathan Wallace grabbed a quick foul...he has 4, Rivers comes back in. 42-31 Hoyas

16:55 left, 2nd half - Roy just led off the half with a huge dunk...then...he did it again! Ridiculous. Two big dunks for Hibbert. That has to deflate the Pirates a bit out of the halftime break. Brian Laing then hit another one inside... He's got 12...37-30 Hoyas...

sappj.jpg

Halftime: Ewing Jr made 2 free throws and put the Hoyas up 7...then the Pirates got their own rebound and couldn't get a shot off...33-26 at half...

:57.2 left, 1st half - Jessie Sapp hit 2 more free throws (he's 5-for-6 from the line) and the Hoyas are back up 5...Sapp then fouled Gause inside and he made both...Hoyas then broke the press on a nice pass from Sapp and Vernon Macklin made a nice reverse move inside for 2.. Macklin then blocked Harvey in transition (I'm telling you: Macklin a star). 31-26 Hoyas

3:00 left, 1st half - Jessie Sapp was fouled on a 3...and nailed all of the free throws...Hoyas open up a 6-point lead (ties their biggest lead of the game). The action is getting a bit chippy down there and there have only been 15 total fouls in the game...Larry Davis (not to be confused with Larry David) just missed 1 of his free throws... 27-22 Hoyas...

5:00 left, 1st half - Jessie Sapp inside for 2...Jeremy Hazell just nailed a contested 3 with the shot clock running out for SHU. DaJuan Summers nailed his own 3 in the corner and the Hoyas are battling! Brian Laing, again, on the wing. He is nails (3-for-6) from the field. Summers then hit another 3!!!! 24-21 Hoyas

7:55 left, 1st half - Jessie Sapp just made a great, acrobatic move in the lane and was fouled...Brian Laing then just nailed a 3...The full court pressure is also back for the Pirates. Hoyas broke the pressure and Hibbert laid in an easy 2...They just called a loose ball foul on Hibbert--fans not too happy (his first, but still) 16-16

ewing4.jpg

10:54 left, 1st half - Larry Davis just got fouled on a 3-ptr by Patrick Ewing Jr...He's a career 36% pct three-pointer shooter...can't be doing that. He made 2 of 3...Hall is up 13-12

12:04 left, 1st half - Patrick Ewing Jr just nailed a 3...surprising: he's only a 39.4 pct 3-pt shooter...hes 9-28 from distance this season. Larry Davis then nailed a jumper...Macklin hit one from the line...12-10 Hoyas

15:05 left, 1st half - One positive early is that Hibbert is moving the ball well inside. He's getting the entry pass and distributing it quickly--it's setting up open baskets--the Hoyas just arent nailing the shots. My boy Vernon Macklin just checked in...in case you aren't an avid reader of these game blogs (which is blasphemy)...I think Macklin gonna be a star. He is coming off a career-high 18 vs. St. John's. 8-6 Hoyas

15:40 left, 1st half - Brian Laing scooped a nice steal and got Eugene Harvey an easy basket in transition. Laing then nailed his own 3....The Pirates are playing a pretty aggressive full-court defense...The Hoyas are having a bit of trouble handling it...Also DaJuan Summers picked up his 2nd foul...not good. 6-6

16:51 left, 1st half - Hibbert went up strong inside and missed and DaJuan Summers put back an easy two...Seton Hall's coach Bobby Gonzalez (the former Manhattan coach) took the whole Coaches vs. Cancer tribute pretty seriously--it looks like he's wearing a smock and some tennis shoes. Roy just nailed a nice hook in the lane and then blocked John Garcia (Seton Hall's 6'9" center) inside. Next possession? Another Hibbert hoop inside. 6-0 Hoyas...

Noon - The lights just went out to do the intros...and this little kid sitting near me started kinda crying. Not cool. Never cool when little kids cry. The Phone Booth isn't too crowded today...the Seton Hall Pirates fans didnt really come out (at least not yet). The upper levels are tremendously empty...a few sections are completely vacant.

2:00 til tipoff - JTIII looks bigtime in those sweet white sneakers. I know it's to raise awareness and that is completely admirable...but seeing a grown man in white sneakers with a thousand-dollar suit is absurd. Speaking of suits, has anyone seen that really weird commerical on local TV with Joe Beninati (Caps announcer) and Juliana Depandi (from E!)? They are selling suits...it's bizarre.

11:40 - Alright, so both teams took the floor to warmup...The Hoyas are going to have a hard time maintaining their dominance on the defensive end today (the Hoyas are No. 1 in the country in field goal pct defense). Brian Laing, the dominant senior forward (and team captain) has a sweet stroke and will look to fill up the stat sheet today. He's averaging 19.3 PPG and 7.3 RPG.

11:30 - MASN is here in the hallways doing a ton of promotion and a whole bunch of events for kids. I'm gonna get you some pics of that too...Then we can talk some hoops...

11:25 - Its Groundhog Day today! I completely forgot my Punxsutawney Phil hat. I only get to wear it once a year and I blew it. Tragic.

11:10 - Everyone is here and accounted for. MASN sent a photographer again (Vincent Reed--good guy)...so we'll get you guys and gals some good pics today.

One interesting note: John Thompson III and a few of the other coaches are sporting tennis shoes. Its part of the nationwide Coaches vs Chancer National Awareness Weekend. Apparently, JTIII will be wearing a pair of specially designed sneakers from Nike.

10:50 - We're here and the Hoyas aren't!! The entire Seton Hall team is on the court warming up and the Hoyas are nowhere to be found.

There are a few bench guys on the court (Hansen, Rivers, etc)...but I dont see Roy, Jonathan and the rest of the game...I'm sure they are okay.
