Phils blank Nats 1-0; Bergmann goes 7, gets no-decision
| | Comments (0)

Jon Rauch came in the game in the 9th to keep it scoreless. He didn't do his job and the Nationals lost 1-0.

Rauch gave up a lead-off double and two batters later a single to put the Phils up for good.

The loss snaps the Nationals 2-game win streak. The win ends the Phillies 3-game losing streak.

Jason Bergmann pitched 7 solid innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks and striking out 5.

Post Game

Final Line Score
Phillies 1-8-0
Nationals 0-5-0
WP-Gordon (4-2)
LP-Rauch (2-1)
Sv-Lidge (11)

Ra-ouch!
Jon Rauch's season-high consecutive scoreless streak ended at 12 innings tonight with the run in the 9th. After the game, he took sole responsibility for the loss.

Ber(gmann), that's cold
Since being recalled from Triple-A on May 15, Jason Bergmann has made two starts and not allowed a run. He has tossed 14 scoreless innings, given up 8 hits, walked 5 and struck out 14. Even though he didn't get a win, he's just trying to give his team a chance to get a "W".

Offensive Star
Cristian Guzman: 2-4. His 17th multi-hit game this season. Has a hit in 15 of last 16 games.

In Game Updates

Relay Team
The Nationals did exactly what a team is supposed to do when a ball is hit to the outfield. With two outs and a runner on first, Shane Victorino hit a double to the gap in left center. Lastings Milledge slid to cut the ball off before it went to the wall. He threw a perfect strike to cut-off man Cristian Guzman. Guzman wheeled around and threw a frozen rope to Jesus Flores. Flores blocked the plate perfectly and stopped the run from scoring. That is how the relay play looks when it's done to perfection.

Pitchers' Final Lines
Jason Bergmann pitched another solid outing of scoreless ball over 7 innings. Unlike the last start, he didn't get a run of support.

Bergmann gave up 5 hits and walked two (one intentionally) and struck out 5. He threw 95 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Cole Hamels was just as good. He gave up just 4 hits and struck out 11. Hamels threw 110 pitches in his 7 innings.

Missed Opportunity
The Phillies had a golden opportunity to get a run on Jason Bergmann in the 7th. The Phils had two on with one out before Cole Hamels sacrificed them to second and third. Bergmann intentionally walked Jimmy Rollins to pitch to Shane Victorino. Victorino lined out to center to end the threat.

Hamels thru 5 innings
Cole Hamels is looking as good as advertised. He and Bergmann cruising thru 5 innings. Hamels has more strikeouts, but he's thrown more pitches than Bergmann. Everything else is pretty much the same. Here is his line.
5 IP, 3 H, BB, 8 K. 81 pitches.

Bergmann thru 5 innings
Jason Bergmann is looking pretty good thru the first 5 innings. His troubles this season seem to come after the 5th, so keep an eye the next few innings. Tonight, he's given up three hits, two by Geoff Jenkins. The only real trouble he was in, which wasn't that bad, came in then first. A 2-out double by Chase Utley and a walk to Ryan Howard put two on, but he got Pat Burrell to pop out to the catcher. Here is his line.
5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K. An efficient 66 pitches.

Pitchers thru 3 innings
Jason Bergmann and Cole Hamels are pitching shutout ball thru 3 innings.

Bergmann has given up two hits and two walks, but stranded all four runners. He's struck out 3 and thrown 46 pitches.

Hamels gave up a 1-out single to Cristian Guzman in the first. Guzman stole second but was left there. Hamels has four strikeouts and has thrown 46 pitches as well.

Injury Update
Johnny Estrada, on the 15-day DL with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow, talked before the game about his injury and where he is right now with rehab.

Don't Scoff at Geoff
Geoff Jenkins seems to have a hot bat early in games, In the two games in this series, Jenkins has gotten hits in his first two at-bats in each game. Last night he had two doubles, tonight, two singles. Unfortunately for the Phillies, he was left on base all four times. In his third at-bat last night he walked. Let's see what he does tonight.

Manny Acta's Pre-game Press Conference
The Nationals face Phils ace Cole Hamels tonight and Acta was asked what his team has to do against the lefty, but he said it's more about his pitcher, Jason Bergmann.

Game Preview
Philadelphia (24-22) at Nationals (20-26)
For the second time this season, the Nationals won the first game of a series against the Phillies. Like the first, Washington looks to take game two.

Jason Bergmann, who battles tough lefty Cole Hamels, looks to extend the Nationals winning streak to 3 straight.

Look for Manny Acta to use a predominantly right-handed hitting line-up against Hamels. If Austin Kearns isn't available, Wily Mo Pena and Elijah Dukes should start in left and right field, respectively.

Nationals Pitcher Jason Bergmann

Pitching Match-Up
RHP Jason Bergmann (1-1, 7.45) is coming off of his best outing of the season. He tossed 7 scoreless innings of 3-hit ball against the Mets on May 15th, picking up the win in the Nationals 1-0 shutout. Bergmann struck out a season-high 9, including the last four batters he faced. He admitted after the game that he didn't have his best fastball. It was his curve and slider that kept the Mets baffled.

Bergmann faced the Phillies on April 3, giving up 5 earned runs on 7 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He got a no-decision in the Phillies 8-7 come-from-behind win in 10 innings. The Nationals spotted Bergmann a 5-run lead after the 1st and led 6-1, before Bergmann tired and got roughed up in the 6th, where they scored all 5-runs off him.

In his career against the Phillies, 9 games, 6 starts, Bergmann is 0-2, 4.54 ERA.

LHP Cole Hamels (5-3, 2.98) is looking to end the Phillies season-high 3-game losing streak. Hamels is coming off of a complete game, 4-hit shutout of the Braves. It was the first of his young career.

Hamels has won his last two starts and 3 of 4. Philadelphia won all 4 games. The 2002 1st-round pick by the Phillies has pitched into the 7th inning in 8 of 9 starts this season.

In his 5 victories, Hamels has given up 7 earned runs in 37 1/3 innings, a 1.69 ERA, and 10 earned runs in 22 innings, a 4.09 ERA in his 3 losses.

Hamles has a career 4-3, 2.49 ERA in 10 starts vs. the Nationals.
