First win, but Guthrie couldn't bear to watch
Jeremy Guthrie said he wasn't even watching when George Sherrill came into close in the 9th inning last night for the Orioles. Guthrie (the starter) was in the clubhouse, with the TVs off because he couldn't bear to watch. He told his teammates, "just let me know when it's over and we won."
Guthrie left after the 7th inning with a 4-2 lead and a prayer that the bullpen would hang on to give Guthrie his first win of the season. Chad Bradford, Jamie Walker and George Sherrill did hang on---by a thread. Guthrie got the long awaited win after going (0-3) to start the season despite some very solid outings.
In his last few starts, it seemed as if Guthrie couldn't buy run support from his teammates. The 4-runs the Orioles produced last night were just enough to give the Birds the 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Orange County, United States of America. I think that's the team's official name now by the way.
Sherrill deserves a lot of credit. He gave up a run in the 9th that allowed the Angels to pull within 1-run, but he left the bases loaded when, with 1-out on the board and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Dave Trembley made the call to pitch to the pinch-hitting Juan Rivera, walk the no. 1-hitter in the lineup Chone Figgans, and pitch to the kid who was just called up from the minors Reggie Willits.
It was one of those tough calls a manager makes that, if it works---he's a genius. If it doesn't work---he's an idiot. The good news is it did work, as Rivera popped up to first, and Willet did the same. Game over.
I love how the Orioles are starting to flatten the bill of their hats after the game when Sherrill gets a save. Nobody has pointed it out much in the press, but it's really catching on more and more with each save. It's great for camaraderie and let's Sherrill know his work is appreciated.
This was a big win as far as starting a long road trip off on a win.

Nice to see your network doing some Norfolk games. Woulnd't make any sense to televise [spelled wrong, think] any of our other minor league teams. It would hurt attendance and proably to expensine to do any away games. One game from Cal's place would be nice. Thanks
