Ravens prep for 2008 season
John Harbaugh's first weekend in front his full squad of Baltimore Ravens sure didn't lack fireworks. The first year head coach's three-day session of mandatory minicamps featured the endless questions about new quarterback Joe Flacco, a tight end rotation comprised of a former basketball player, a quarterback, and a linebacker, and a brawl that involved almost the entire roster.
Not a bad way to kick off the 2008 season.

Flacco, the Ravens' first round pick out of the University of Delaware, impressed coaches and teammates during his first NFL minicamp last Friday, where he showed off his rocket of an arm on a 50 yard deep ball that Mark Clayton reeled in for a touchdown. Harbaugh has elected to throw the rookie QB right into the fire, and Flacco earned praise from the coaching staff for being up to the task.
"We don't believe in spoon feeding," Harbaugh said. "We throw it all at him, and he handled it well."
Flacco also withstood the 10-minute interrogation that the media put him through afterwards, as well as some joking at the hands of Ray Lewis.
Flacco's agent and the Ravens have discussed the framework of a five-year contract, but regardless of when the deal is completed, Flacco will not be able to rejoin the team until next month. A NFL-NCAA rule limits rookies to one pro minicamp while his school is still in session, and the University of Delaware does not finish exams until May 30.
The Ravens have chosen to move their rookie mini-camp from May 20-22 to June 16-18, presumably to avoid this rule, so that Flacco and other rookies will be allowed to attend.
The situation at tight end is becoming a sticky one for the Ravens. Starter Todd Heap was out most of last year with a hamstring injury and already missed part of last weekend's practices to rest that same hamstring. The depth behind Heap is an even bigger issue. Backups Daniel Wilcox (still rehabbing from toe surgery), and Quinn Sypniewski (out for the season with a torn knee ligament) were not in the picture for minicamps, so the Ravens had to be creative.
Joe Reitz played basketball at Western Michigan the last four years, but moved from the hardwood to the huddle last weekend. Also getting some reps at tight end were Xavier Lee, a quarterback at Florida State for three years, and Edgar Jones, who played for the Ravens last year - at outside linebacker.
Given the situation, tight ends coach Wade Harmon is willing to keep an open mind and do some experimenting.
"You never know if you can come across a guy that can play if you give him an opportunity," Harmon said. "These camps are a way to see some guys that have some athletic ability."
As for the physicality, you often hear coaches saying that they want to "see some fight" in their players, but they probably don't mean it literally. That's how things played out on Saturday, however, as two brawls erupted during the Ravens' indoor practice. The first, between rookie offensive tackle Oniel Cousins and defensive lineman Amon Gordon, escalated to the point that most of the team jumped in to try and separate the two players.
"I think we have guys who take care of each other, even in the brawl, guys were taking care of each other, and we can get back and practice," Harbaugh said. "The thing that they understand is that we're not going to slow down practice, and we're not going to miss any reps."
The Ravens' next Organized Team Activity is a passing camp which will take place on May 28.
