A sighting on the subway before a game in New York
| | Comments (3)

A pretty cool part of my gig at MASN is traveling to different cities with the Orioles.

During the day, a lot of the players and staff take advantage of having days off and will walk around the city before heading to the park. In New York we stay right next to Grand Central Station, smack dab in the middle of Manhattan.

Today I hopped on the New York City subway and headed to lower Manhattan.

Walking to the subway, I saw Randor Bierd coming out of the subway as I was going in. I thought it was good to see the players slumming it on public transportation with the rest of us.

That was nothing.

As I entered the subway car on the four train, I noticed a familiar face next to me---Michael Bloomberg---the Mayor of New York City.

For those of you who've been living under a rock, Mayor Bloomberg isn't just the mayor of New York, he's a multi-millionaire. You'd think he could spring for a cab and still be considered a man of the people.

Maybe he just doesn't like traffic and prefers sweating it out in the steamy subway with random strangers who haven't bathed rubbing up against him.

I was impressed. For the record, Mayor Bloomberg did get off before the train headed into Brooklyn. If that happened, I'd be really impressed.

Amber,

That's great that you were able to experience that. My wife and I have only been to New York on two occasions (WNBA games), but we'll probably make our way back there at some point in the near future. I think that riding the public transportation can be more fun at times because you can focus on the scenery as opposed to if you were driving around yourself. Especially if you have a few hours to kill. I'm sure by now you've seen that you can learn so much just by traveling. Nobody knows that better you, with all the time you spend on the road each year with the O's! :)

By the way, Daniel Cabrera was straight robbed last night getting tossed like he did. Yes, I agree with Buck that the umpire can throw a player out without a warning, but my goodness, we're talking about Cabrera here. I haven't heard him say a bad thing about anybody. Normally, pitchers will get SOME kind of warning before that, but he just didn't. I'm glad we won, but still...I couldn't believe that at that point the umpire decides to toss him. It's good that our guys maintained our composure and was able to score another run after that in order to win.

Amber,

#1 - Try multi-billionaire. A week or two ago the WSJ valued his news service at apprx $30B.

#2 - What's the word on Roch Kubatko? His Sun Blog has essentially died ever since he announced that he accepted the buyout. Is he going have to have a blog on MASN?

Thanks.

Amber,
that does sound awesome. I once traveled to New York before 9/11 and it is a nice place.
