Collin Balester didn't have his best stuff, but he showed guts by battling through it. He pitched five decent innings and kept the game close enough for the Nationals to possibly pick up the win. Balester could've pitched longer, but Manny Acta did the right thing and pinch-hit for him in the sixth. Here's his final line:

Balester thru 3 innings
Collin Balester ran into trouble in the first and gave up two runs. He gave up a lead-off single in the second, but has retired the last six Giants. Six of the nine outs Balester has registered are groundball outs. Here's his line.

Jason Bergmann only gave up five hits last night, but three were homers and the Nationals dropped a 6-3 decision to the Giants in the series opener.
Ryan Zimmerman, who missed the previous 48 games because of a small labrum tear in his left shoulder, was 1-3 with two walks. Pitching Match-Up

RHP Collin Balester (1-2, 5.87) has struggled in his last two outings after winning his Major League debut. He didn't make it out of the fifth in his last start on July 12th against the Astros.
Balester gave up 11 hits and six runs, only four earned, in 4 2/3 innings. He left the game in the fifth after giving up three runs on five hits and exited with the bases loaded. Hunter Pence hit a 2-run homer and drove in another run with a single. Balester needed 91 pitches to get through his brief night.
In his second start, he retired the first 11 Reds before giving up a 3-run homer to Adam Dunn, in the fourth. Balester was touched for two more runs in the fifth and lost 6-3.
This is the first career start against the Giants.
RHP Kevin Correia (1-5, 5.81) is winless in his last nine starts, going 0-4 with five no-decisions. His last start, July 12th against the Cubs, Correia was shelled for seven runs on nine hits in just 3 2/3 innings in the Giants 8-7 loss in 11 innings. He received a no-decision.
He gave up a run in the first, two in the second and four in the third. Jim Edmonds drove in four runs on a 2-run homer and a 2-run double.
Correia is making his sixth start in front of the hometown fans. He is 1-2 with a 5.26 ERA.
In his career vs. the Nationals, eight games, one start, he is 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA while holding Washington to a .209 batting average. In that lone start, last August at RFK, Correia gave up two runs on five hits in six solid innings to earn the win in the Giants 3-2 victory.
