The Nationals failed to score a run for the second consecutive game; they drop their sixth straight, get swept in California and end their 9-game road trip with a 2-7 record. Washington's scoreless streak is now at 19 innings.

Clayton Kershaw tossed six scoreless innings to earn his first Major League victory and three relievers combined to shut down the Nationals the rest of the way. James Loney's solo home run to lead-off the second turned out to be all Kershaw would need.

Jason Bergmann took the loss and fell to 1-8 on the season. He gave up two runs on six hits in six innings, but without any run support, he was saddled with the loss.

The Nationals didn't get a runner to third base all afternoon. The only time they came close, Lastings Milledge was thrown out trying to go from first to third in the fifth.

With Paul Lo Duca batting and Milledge on first, Lo duca hit a slow grounder to third. Casey Blake threw Lo Duca out at first and Milledge never stopped running as he rounded second. A perfect throw from James Loney nailed Milledge for the 5-3-6 double play. The play hurt because Wil Nieves doubled and Milledge would've scored the tying run.

The six consecutive losses is the most since they lost six in a row from July 2-8. Washington falls to 18-37 on the road this season and they are 29 games under .500, 38-67.

The Nationals offense has scored just two runs on 16 hits in their last four games, batting a meager .133 in that span.

The Nationals have Monday off before starting a six-game homestand beginning with a three-game set against the Phillies on Tuesday night.

Bergmann thru 6 innings
Bergmann just struck out the side in the sixth, but it may have been his last inning. He's thrown 102 pitches and trails 2-0. Once again, the Nationals offense is nowhere to be found and he stands to take the loss. Bergmann has pitched pretty well, limiting the Dodgers to six hits and getting himself out of two jams.
6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K, HR. 102 pitches.

Dodgers scoring, 5th inning
Russell Martin faught off an inside curveball and fisted it into left field to put the Dodgers up 2-0 after five full innings.

With 1-out, Juan Pierre and Matt Kemp singled to put runners on first and second. Martin looked to get handcuffed, but managed to get the ball to the outfield and score Pierre. Jason Bergmann got out of the inning without any more damage.

Trying to be aggressive
It didn't work out, but at least Lastings Milledge was trying to generate some offense. With Paul Lo Duca at the plate and Milledge on first, Lo Duca hit a slow roller to third. Milledge was running on the play and tried to go to third. Lo Duca was out on the play and James Loney made a perfect throw to Nomar Garciaparra, who was covering the base from his shorstop position, and applied the tag for the unusual 5-3-6 double play. Had Milledge not attempted to take the extra base, he would've scored on the next play. Wil Nieves doubled to left and Milledge could have scored easily. Can't blame a man for trying.

Bergmann thru 3 innings
Jason Bergmann has given up three hits to this point, and the one he'd like back was the solo home run by James Loney in the second. He just got himself out of a 2-out, first and third jam in the third.
3 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 2 K, HR. 48 pitches.

Dodgers scoring, 2nd inning
James Loney's ninth home run of the season put the Dodgers in front 1-0 in the second.

Loney hit Jason Bergmann's first pitch of the inning, a 90-MPH fastball, into the seats in right-center to give LA the lead.

Errors didn't hurt
Both the Dodgers and Nationals commited errors in the first inning, but neither could capitalize.

Nomar Garciaparra booted a grounder by Ryan Zimmerman. After Zimmerman stole second, his first of the year, Austin Kearns grounded out to end the inning.

Jason Bergmann walked Matt Kemp with 1-out. Kemp stole second and advanced to third on Wil Nieves throwing error, but Bergmann got Russell Martin and Jeff Kent to pop out to first to avoid any damage.

Game Preview
Nationals (38-66) at Los Angeles (51-52)
Derek Lowe held the Nationals to one hit in eight innings as the Dodgers shutout the Nationals 6-0, handing them their fifth straight loss.

During the losing streak, the Nationals have been outscored 22-9 and Wasington's starters have been tagged with the loss in four of the five games. This afternoon, Washington looks to salvage the weekend series and end their 9-game road trip on a positive note

Pitching Match-Up

Nationals Pitcher Jason Bergmann

RHP Jason Bergmann (1-7, 4.21) gave up three home runs, two to Bengie Molina, in the Giants 6-3 win last Tuesday night. Bergmann gave up five runs, four earned, in five innings and remains winless in his last 12 starts.

Bergmann gave up a solo homer to Fred Lewis to lead-off the first and a 2-run shot to Molina and fell behind 3-0. After the Nationals made it a 3-2 game in the fourth, Molina took Bergmann deep for the second time and Omar Vizquel doubled home a run to make it 5-2.

Bergmann is making his first start against LA this season. Last year he didn't factor in the decision in the Dodgers 4-3 win. Bergmann gave up three runs in six innings. He gave up a 2-run single to Shea Hillenbrand and a solo homer to Jeff Kent.

His lone win came on the road and Bergmann is 1-5 in seven starts.

RHP Clayton Kershaw (0-3, 5.18) is looking for his first win of the season. He has six no-decisions to go along with the three losses.

In his first start since being recalled from Triple-A on July 22nd, Kershaw didn't retire a batter in the fourth inning at Coors Field, giving up five runs on 10 hits in three innings in the Rockies 10-1 win.

The rookie pitcher is making his fifth start at Dodger stadium. Kershaw is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA. He has never faced the Nationals.
