Nationals Minor League Monday: Young All-Stars give hope to big club for future success

Pete McElroy's Nats Blog:
Injuries, not losses have hurt the most [link]

Nats Minor League All-StarsWashington's Minor League system is loaded with young talent. Three more of the Nationals' future were rewarded by being named to the Double-A Eastern League All-Star game.

RHP Jordan Zimmerman, RHP Bobby Brownlie and OF Mike Daniel will represent the Southern Division team at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on July 16th.

Zimmerman, a second round pick in the 2007 Draft, has allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his 10 starts for the Harrisburg Senators to earn the honor. Zimmerman was promoted on May 4th, from Single-A Potomac, and went a combined 5-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 15 games, 14 starts, for Harrisburg and Potomac.

Brownlie has been outstanding for the Senators. The Nationals signed the Minor League free-agent in the offseason and all he's done is go undefeated for Harrisburg. He is 6-0 with a 3.33 ERA in nine starts.

Daniel will be making his third consecutive All-Star game appearance. The 23-year-old, seventh-round pick in the 2005 Draft, was named to the 2007 Single-A South Atlantic
League All-Star team and earned Short-Season Single-A New York-Penn League All-Star honors in 2006. Daniel has put up some gaudy numbers this season. He is hitting .302 with 8 home runs, 37 RBI and 13 steals in 78 games.

Triple-A Columbus International League West Division
51-38, 1st place, 2 games ahead

Garrett Mock.jpg
The Clippers have been on a roll since last week. They are 8-2 in their last 10 and have won six straight games to jump into first place in the West. Most of the success can be attributed to their starting pitching. RHP Garrett Mock and RHP Marco Estrada have been studs. Mock is 3-0 with a 3.45 ERA in his last five starts and Estrada is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA since being promoted on June 16th, four starts. Columbus continues a 4-game series with the Indianapolis Indians tonight.

Double-A Harrisburg Senators Eastern League Southern Division
48-39, 3rd place, 6 ½ games out of first

Harrisburg has been average over the last week, going 4-6 in their last 10 games and losing two games in the standings, but they have won four of six. The Sens offense has been led by newly promoted infielder Bill Rhinehart. In his seven games in Double-A, Rhinehart is batting .346 with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBI. It's not surprising since he hit .320 with Potomac to earn the promotion. Another infielder has been on a tear lately, catcher Devin Ivany. Ivany hit .310 in June and has thrown out 40% of would-be base stealers. Harrisburg wraps up a 4-game series with the Altoona Curve tonight. The Senators won two of the first three.

Single-A Potomac Nationals Carolina League Northern Division
10-6, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead (2nd half)

The P-Nats are 5-5 in their last 10 games and hold onto a ½ game lead in the division. RHP Josh Wilkie was lights out in his first 27 appearances. He had a paper thin 0.95 ERA over those outings, but has been roughed up a bit in his last two. He gave up two earned runs on July 5th to raise his ERA to 1.37 for the season, still very, very good for the 23-year-old, George Washington University product. Right-handed starter Jeff Mandel has been solid in his six starts since being promoted from Hagerstown in early June. He's 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA. Mandel has given up two earned runs or less in five of the six starts. The P-Nats have a double-header with Salem Monday night.

Single-A Hagerstown Suns South Atlantic League Northern Division
9-8, 3rd place, 3 game out of first (2nd Half)

The Suns have lost five of their last six games to fall out of first place in the division. One player you can't blame is Michael Burgess. The 19-year-old has been as hot as the summer temperatures both offensively and defensively. Burgess leads all of professional baseball with 20 outfield assists, and his 15 home runs are second in the South Atlantic League. Hagerstown's bullpen has been amazing all season. Combined they are 11-6 with a 3.56 ERA. The Suns begin a 4-game series with Asheville Monday night.
