Nationals Place Elijah Dukes on 15-day DL
The Washington Nationals today placed outfielder Elijah Dukes on the 15-day Disabled List (retroactive to July 6) with a meniscus tear and partial tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee, and recalled outfielder Kory Casto from Triple-A Columbus. Nationals Senior Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made this announcement.
Dukes suffered the injury while making a running catch against the left field wall on Saturday in Cincinnati. This DL stint marks his second and the 19th by a Nationals player this season. Dukes is one of eight starters from the team's Opening Night lineup, excluding only shortstop Cristian Guzman, who has seen extended time on the DL this season. The team has sent 14 different players to the DL (10 from the Opening Night roster), and has lost a total of 565 games to injuries. Washington currently has eight players on the DL.
The 24 year-old batted .263 with six home runs, eight doubles, two triples and 20 RBI in 52 games this season. He had been swinging a hot bat in his last 30 games, hitting .314 (38-for-121) with six doubles, two triples, six home runs and 18 RBI. He had a .403 on-base percentage and .545 slugging percentage over that span.
