Nats acquire shortstop for Minor League pitcher
The trade deadline has come and gone, but not with much fanfare, as the Nationals made one move, albeit minor. They didn't make a blockbuster deal to improve their current roster; instead they got a player for the future.
Washington acquired shortstop Alberto Gonzalez from the New York Yankees in exchange for Minor League right-handed pitcher Jhonny Nunez.
Gonzalez, rated as the top defensive infielder in the Yankees Minor League system, was hitting .250 with eight doubles, four home runs, 23 RBI and 23 runs scored in 47 games in Triple-A for Scranton Wilkes-Barre of the International League.
In 28 games for Joe Girardi's Yankees, Gonzalez hit .173 with two doubles, an RBI and four runs scored this year.
Nunez, who was with the Harrisburg Senators and Potomac nationals this season, went a combined 2-8 with a 4.85 ERA in 26 games, 17 starts.
Gonzalez will join the Nationals and be in uniform on Friday when the team hosts the Cincinnati Reds for a 3-game weekend series.
Manny Acta was asked about Gonzalez and here is what he said.
