Rotation Speculation

Daniel Cabrera pitched seven solid innings and Aubrey Huff homered and knocked in four as the Orioles beat the Yankees, 7-6, Tuesday night. The Orioles have now won three in a row.

Behind by 7-3, New York scored three in the last of the 9th vs. George Sherrill. But with the tie run on second base, Sherrill struck out Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit to end the game.

Huff's three-run double in the 7th gave the O's a 5-1 lead. He hit a solo homer off Mariano Rivera in the 9th to make it 7-3. In the first two games of this series, Huff is 6-9 with two doubles, two homers and 7 RBI.

This win gives the O's a series win in New York. The O's last series win came just over a month ago vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field. They had lost six series and tied two since.

Cabrera, now 7-6, gave up just three runs and eight hits over seven innings. He was ejected after hitting Alex Rodriguez in the 8th. Rodriguez had homered in the 6th. Cabrera is 3-0 this year vs. New York.

The Orioles are 7-4 this season vs. the Yankees and have won four of the last five games between the teams.

The Orioles scored four times in the 7th to break the game open and lead New York, 6-1. Brian Roberts led off with a single and Adam Jones was hit by a pitch. Damaso Marte came in for Darrel Rasner and Nick Markakis' bloop single loaded the bases.

Huff then ripped an 0-2 pitch to left-center for a three-run double and 5-1 lead. Melvin Mora followed with an RBI double to right for a 6-1 O's edge.

Rodriguez led off the Yankees sixth with a booming solo homer to center to cut the O's lead to 2-1. It's his 22nd homer and 63rd RBI.

Kevin Millar led off the O's fourth with a solo homer to left to make it a 2-0 game. It's his 6th homer this year vs. the Yankees and his 15th of the season.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first. After the first two hitters were retired, the O's came up with three straight singles, the third by Mora for a 1-0 lead. It's his 64th RBI. But Darrel Rasner got Millar to pop out with the bases loaded to end the threat and hold the O's to one in the inning.

Postgame Notes

A Turning Point
Dave Trembley was right. The ejection of Daniel Cabrera in the 8th by home plate ump Chad Fairchild, while the wrong decision, also got 54,000 Yankees fans back in the game. It changed the whole complexion of the game with just six outs to go. In past years the O's would have blown this lead and lost. Winning 7-6 is good enough, it could have been much worse and a loss would have been as bad as any loss this year.

Beating the Yankees
The Orioles have outscored NY 20-10 in this series. They are 7-4 vs. the Yankees this year, 4-2 in Baltimore and 3-2 at New York. They have outscored NY this season, 66-45 runs and outscored them at Yankee Stadium, 33-22. Since the start of last year, the O's are 16-13 vs. the Yankees. The clubs have played four series this year and the O's have won three of them.

Hot Hitting Huff
Tonight's game: 4-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI
This series: 6-9, 2 HR, 2 2B, 7 RBI
During 8-game hitting streak: 17-34 at bat, .500 average, 10 RBI
His last 42 games: Batting .389-13-40 with 17 doubles
In month of July: .388-8-25 (38-98 at bat)
This year vs. Yankees: .359-3-14 in 11 games (14-39 at bat)

His batting average is up to .302. Huff is 10-17 over his last four games and now has 7 multi-hit games in his 8 contests.

Amber Theoharis' postgame interview with Aubrey Huff

Cabrera Comes up Big
The big guy came up with a big effort that would have been even better save for the home plate ump. Cabrera allows just three runs over seven innings. He is now 3-0, 3.15 this season vs. New York and 7-6 on the season giving the O's now four seven-game winners. It's just the second time in 23 games (Guthrie on July 10) that an O's starter pitched at least seven frames. It's just Cabrera's 2nd win in his last 13 starts. It's the O's third straight quality start and Cabrera's 12th on the year.

Final Notes
The Orioles offense has produced 20 runs on 29 hits in this series.......They have six homers and 14 extra-base hits in the series........The team average is .367 in the series......The O's improve to 19-20 in one-run decisions and 19-28 in games vs. the AL East.....Melvin Mora had two RBI and now has 17 RBI his last 12 games.......Nick Markakis' stolen base in the 3rd was the O's first since July 13th.....They went 12 games without one.........The O's have now scored 78 runs in 13 games since the All-Star break, an average of 6.0 per game.

Kevin Millar went 2-5 with a solo homer......This season vs. New York he is batting .362 with 5 homers and 9 RBI.......After winning their first eight games after the break, New York has lost three in a row, giving up 29 runs in those games......New York has won 13 of 19 games.......Alex Rodriguez hit a solo homer in the 6th......It was his 18th since coming off the DL on May 20th, his 4th in his career vs. Daniel Cabrera and his 46th in 162 career games vs. the Orioles.

Gross Overeaction
Home plate ump Brad Fairchild has just ejected Daniel Cabrera for hitting A-Rod with a pitch. So much for Cabrera getting to finish off his great start tonight. There is no way Cabrera is throwing at A-Rod there. The pitch just got away from him and went up and in. A-Rod homered earlier and it didn't look good, but Daniel was shocked and so was Dave Trembley. It was just bad umpire work. Maybe Fairchild doesn't know Cabrera leads the league in hitting batters. Just a mistake by the ump. Lucky for the O's they need just six more outs. Jim Johnson comes on.

Cabrera's line: 7IP, 8H, 3R-ER, 2BB, 2K, 1 HR........103 pitches

This is just the second time in 23 games an O's pitcher worked seven innings or more. Guthrie did it July 10 at Toronto. It's the 17th time this season Cabrera has pitched 6 innings or more.

Updating Huff (through 7 innings tonight)
Tonight's game: 3-4, 2B, 3 RBI
This series: 5-8, HR, 2 2B, 6 RBI
During 8-game hitting streak: 16-33 at bat, .485 average, 9 RBI
His last 42 games: Batting .386-12-39 with 17 doubles

And, also this. After his three-run double in the 7th, his batting average on the year is now exactly .300.

Double-A Hitters
Two hot hitters at Double-A Bowie are doing it again tonight as both Lou Montanez and Matt Wieters are 3-3 so far tonight as Bowie leads New Britain 8-0 in the fifth. Wieters has a homer and 4 RBI tonight. With his night, Montanez now has a 13-game hitting streak during which he is batting .426 (20-47) with three homers and 18 RBI.

Pitching Probables, Seattle Series
Fri 10:10pm: Garrett Olson (7-5, 5.90) vs. LH Jarrod Washburn (5-9, 4.50)
Sat 10:10pm: Jeremy Guthrie (7-8, 3.58) vs. RH Felix Hernandez (7-6, 2.95)
Sun 4:10pm: Daniel Cabrera (6-6, 4.86) vs. RH Carlos Silva (4-12, 5.62)

Yankees vs. AL East
v. Bost: 6-6
v. TB: 7-5
v. Tor 5-4
v. Balt 4-6

Finally, a Stolen Base
Nick Markakis stole second base in the third inning tonight. It had been a while since the O's stole a base, the last time it happened was July 13th in the second inning at Boston when Jay Payton got one. The O's went 12 games without one. It didn't lead to a run as the O's wasted leadoff walks in the second and third frames.

Cabrera Strong Early
Good to see Cabrera get off to a strong start. Maybe after Olson Sunday and Guthrie last night, O's starting pitching will make a turn for the better. The biggest factor in this club avoiding a late-season collapse is the starting pitching. Cabrera puts up two shutout innings thus far, throwing just 27 pitches. So far, so good.

Game Two Underway
Game two of the series in the Bronx is underway. Will the O's hot hitting carry over tonight vs. Darrel Rasner. Check back tonight for news and updates.

Game Preview
Orioles (50-55) at NY Yankees (58-47)
The Orioles got their nine-game road trip off to a great start with Monday's 13-4 win at New York. Tonight they look for two wins in a row at Yankee Stadium.

Adam Jones hit a Grand Slam and knocked in five to lead a 17-hit O's attack that featured four home runs and a season-high nine extra-base hits. The O's 13 runs scored was also a season-high.

The Orioles are 6-4 vs. the Yankees this season and that includes a 2-2 mark at Yankee Stadium. In the O's two wins in New York, they have scored 25 total runs, while in their two losses there they scored a total of one run.

Kevin Millar, Aubrey Huff and Ramon Hernandez also homered for the Orioles in their 50th win of the season. They are now 8-15 in July.

After beginning the second-half with eight straight wins, New York has now lost its last two games, giving up a total of 22 runs in those losses. Overall, New York has won 13 of 18 and is 38-22 since May 21st.

The O's victory Monday ended New York's 10-game, Yankee Stadium winning streak. A win tonight would clinch the series for the Orioles, who have lost six series and tied two since winning 2 of 3 at Wrigley Field in late June.

Pitching Match-Up

Daniel-Cabrera.jpg

Daniel Cabrera (6-6, 4.86) tonight makes his 23rd start of the season, his 14th on the road and the 16th of his career against the Yankees.

Cabrera is trying to recapture the form that saw him record a career-best 8 straight quality starts from April 12 to May 20. Over his last two starts, Cabrera is 0-1, 11.70, giving up 13ER over 10 frames. He is winless in his past four starts.

Cabrera April & May: 5-1, 3.60 in 12 starts
Cabrera June & July: 1-5, 6.56 in 10 starts

Cabrera, who has 11 quality starts on the season, pitched to an ERA of 7.06 in June and is 1-2, 6.07 in five July starts.

Left-handed batters hit .297 and righties .240 vs. Cabrera. In 13 road starts, he is 3-5, 4.18. His home ERA is 5.89. The Orioles are 11-10 when he starts.

RHP Darrel Rasner (5-7, 4.83) tonight will make his 14th start of the season, his 7th at home and his third this season vs. the Orioles.

After pitching to an ERA of 1.80 in May, Rasner's ERA was 6.47 in June and, in three July starts, he is 1-1, 6.32.

Rasner has failed to pitch six innings in seven straight starts. He recorded a quality start in five of his first six outings of the year, but doesn't have one his past seven starts. The Yankees are 6-7 when he starts this year.

Right-handed batters hit .325 off Rasner, while lefties hit .279 and opponents bat .235 vs. him with runners in scoring position. In six Yankee Stadium starts, he is 3-2, 3.44.

The 27-year-old allows a batting average of just .227 on his first 25 pitches on a game but that goes up to .338 on pitches 26-50. Rasner has allowed just one run in 13 innings vs. the O's this season.

Rasner vs. Baltimore:
2008: 1-1, 0.69, two starts (13 IP, 10H, 1R-ER)
2007: 0-1, 10.38, one start
Career: 1-3, 5.03 in four starts over 19 2/3
