Orioles score 8 runs in the fifth, beat Mariners 10-5
| | Comments (0)

The Orioles scored 8 runs in the 5th inning, their biggest inning of the year, in beating Seattle 10-5 Friday night. Garrett Olson took an 8-hit shutout to the 9th but the Mariners scored five off Olson and Lance Cormier on seven singles in the last of the ninth.

Olson, now 8-5, gave up three runs over 8 1/3 in the longest outing of his career. He becomes the Orioles' first eight-game winner this year.

The O's batted twelve in the fifth inning. With two out and none out, nine straight O's batters reached as a 1-0 lead turned into a 9-0 rout. Five Orioles drove in runs in the frame with Adam Jones picking up a two-run single and Jay Payton a three-run triple.

The Orioles have now won four of five games and are 3-1 on this road trip. The Birds are 7-1 this season vs. Seattle.

The Mariners have lost six in a row at home and fall to 4-11 since the All-Star break.

The Orioles' lead grew to 10-0 in the 8th. Kevin Millar's RBI single scored Luke Scott, who had reached on an error.

The Orioles produced eight runs on nine hits in the top of the fifth to take a 9-0 lead. After two were out and none on, nine straight Orioles reached base before the M's recorded the inning's third out.

Three straight singles by Nick Markakis, Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora made it 2-0. A Ramon Hernandez RBI double made it a 3-0 edge. After Kevin Millar walked, Roy Corcoran replaced Jarrod Washburn. Jay Payton greeted him with a three-run triple and it was 6-0. Juan Castro added an RBI single and an Adam Jones two-run single capped the scoring in the inning and made it a 9-0 lead.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Jones singled to right and scored on a Markakis double to right center. It's Markakis' 57th RBI.

Postgame Notes

Olson's Night

It was the longest outing of his 25-start career, as Olson pitched 8 1/3. He gives up three runs on 11 hits after taking an 8-hit shutout into the ninth. He threw 117 pitches, 73 for strikes. He is now 8-5, 5.67. Olson has now won back-to-back starts with a combined ERA of 3.14 in the outings vs. the Angels and M's. Previously, his longest outing of this year was a 7-inning effort May 26th vs. the Yankees. Despite the 9th, Olson has to feel very good about his two straight solid efforts. A struggling starting staff has really needed it.

Mark Viviano's postgame interview with Garrett Olson

Payton's Place
Is with the bases loaded. Jay Payton came up with a three-run triple in the 5th. He is now 7-10 this season when batting with the bases loaded. He has two doubles, one triple, one homer and 16 of his 36 RBI this year with the bases full.

The Big Inning
The most runs the O's had scored in an inning before tonight was seven, which they did twice vs. the Yankees. The most hits they had in an inning before tonight was 8 hits in one frame, July 19th vs. Detroit. But they topped both marks tonight with an 8-run, 9-hit top of the 5th. Five different O's drove in runs and 8 O's had hits in the inning. The inning featured Payton's three-run triple, an Adam Jones two-run single, Ramon Hernandez's 200th career double and two hits in the frame (single and double) by Brian Roberts. It took a diving catch by center fielder Jeremy Reed to stop the onslaught and end the scoring.

No Shutout
The Mariners' seven-single 9th inning avoided a shutout. The O's have now gone 91 games without one, that is apparently the longest current streak in the Majors. They have one shutout all season, a 6-0 win on April 19th vs. the Yankees. Have you ever seen so many infield and seeing eye hits as the M's got in the 9th. That was annoying.

Final Notes
The Orioles are batting .329 as a team with 33 runs scored in the four games on this road trip.........They have scored 91 runs (6.1 per game) since the All-Star break.....The 16 hits is one off the season-high.......Aubrey Huff went 1-3 and is now batting .475 (19-40) during his ten-game hitting streak......Nick Markakis was 3-5 and is batting .379 (11-29) during his seven-game hitting streak......Brian Roberts' double in the 5th was his league-leading 40th and his 21st double in his last 41 contests......Seven different Orioles drove in runs and five had multi-hit games.......The O's are now 24-12 in series-opening games..........O's starters have worked to an ERA of 3.41 the last five games.

Steve Melewski's Live GameBlog

Olson with a Shutout Through Seven
Even though he has allowed six hits over the last three innings, Garrett Olson still has a shutout going and I see no reason he shouldn't come out for the 8th inning, especially with a 9-0 score. He's thrown only 88 pitches. His season high in pitches was the 108 he threw two starts ago.

Liz Wins at Triple-A
Radhames Liz got a win tonight in his first Norfolk start since the O's sent him back down to the Minors. In seven innings he gave up just three hits and one run vs. Lehigh Valley with one walk and five strikeouts. Five different Tides drove in two runs each in the 12-1 win: Fiorentino, Redman, Salazar, Costanzo and Terrero.

Huff Update
MASN's Mark Viviano, filling in for Amber tonight in Seattle, reported that Aubrey Huff left tonight's game with an injury when he hit his head on the top of the dugout. Luke Scott hit for Huff in the 6th. He reported Dave Trembley as telling him, "It's alright." More info as we get it.

The Biggest Inning of the Year
It's officially the Orioles' biggest inning of the year, their 8-run 5th to open a 9-0 lead at Seattle. They had scored seven in an inning twice before, both times vs. the Yankees. Their nine hits in one inning is a season-best. They had an 8-hit inning on July 19th vs. Detroit. Twelve batted in the inning and the outs were even hit hard, an Adam Jones double play grounder and Markakis liner to center where Jeremy Reed had to make a diving catch for the third out. Five O's had RBI in that frame.

Nick at Night
Nick Markakis is 3-3 tonight through the fifth inning off lefty Jarrod Washburn. He began tonight hitting .322 vs. left-handed pitching. It's Markakis' first three-hit game since July 9 at Toronto. His only four-hit game this season came June 6th, also at Toronto. He is now batting .407 during a seven-game hitting streak.

Olson Sharp Early
The Orioles want Garrett Olson to attack hitters and get ahead with his fastball. He's doing that tonight and has faced the minimum nine batters through three frames. He has a 1-0 lead and has needed just 28 pitches so far. That's his best stat of the night. The O's wasted a bases-loaded chance in the second, however and have one run through four at bats vs. Washburn.

Montanez with Monster Night
Lou Montanez continued to tear up Eastern League pitching tonight in Bowie's 19-3 romp at Akron. He tied Baysox records with five hits and 8 RBI in the game and he hit for the cycle. Montanez, who leads the league in homers and RBI, went 5-6 with a double, triple, homer and the 8 RBI. He hit his 25th homer, raised his average to .332 and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Matt Wieters went 0-4 in this game and Nolan Reimold hit a three-run homer. Winning pitcher Jason Berken is 10-3, 3.52.

The team record for hits in a game, five, was set by Val Majewski in 2004. The club record of 8 RBI in a game was held by Doug Gredvig (2002) and Cory Keylor (2006).

Brad Bergesen, 13-3, 2.68 pitches Saturday night for Bowie.

Let's Play Ball
Tonight's game is underway at SafeCo. Let's see if the O's can build on the good start to the trip at New York and continue their dominance this year vs. Seattle. Check back here often during tonight's game for news and updates.

Game Preview
Orioles (51-56) at Seattle (41-67)
After taking two of three in New York, the Orioles' second stop of their three-city road trip is in Seattle. The O's and M's begin a three-game series tonight at Safeco Field.

The O's won the first two games of the series at Yankee Stadium before Wednesday's 13-3 loss. So the O's are 2-1 on this nine-game road trip which heads to Los Angeles Monday.

The series win in New York was the Orioles first since they took 2 of 3 at Wrigley Field from June 24-26. After that, they lost six series and tied two.

The O's hit .310 as team and scored 23 runs in New York. They had 35 hits, including 7 homers in the series. O's starters, after struggling for several weeks, have pitched to an ERA of 3.47 over the last four games.

Seattle beat Texas last night to split a four-game series and end a road trip with a 3-4 record. The Mariners, in last place in the AL West, are 4-9 since the All-Star break and finished July at 10-16.

Since Jim Riggleman took over as manager on June 20th, Seattle is 16-20.

The Mariners offense has produced double-figure hits in a season-best, six straight games with a team average of .303 in those six contests. The M's bullpen has worked to an ERA of 3.17 over its last 81 games. Jose Lopez has a season-high 18-game hitting streak during which he is batting .329.

The Orioles are 6-1 this season against the Mariners, matching their combined win total of 2006 and 2007 vs. the M's when they went 6-13. The O's swept a four-game series in early April in Baltimore and later in the month took 2 of 3 in Seattle.

The O's are batting .284 this year with 34 runs scored vs. the M's and have pitched to a team ERA of 3.77 in the season series. They are 4-0 vs. Seattle in games decided by one run.

Roster Move Today
The O's today recalled IF Alex Cintron from his minor-league rehab assignment and activated him from the disabled list. They have optioned LHP Brian Burres to Triple-A Norfolk. Cintron was placed on the DL July 1st with a strained left hamstring. He batted .429 (6-14) in five rehab games with Frederick and Bowie. Cintron batted .275-1-7 in 26 games with the Orioles this year.

Burres was 7-7. 5.64 in 22 games, 19 starts for the O's this season. In his last two appearances he allowed 9 ER and 11 hits in just three innings.

Pitching Match-Up

Garrett-Olson.jpg

LHP Garrett Olson (7-5, 5.90) tonight will make his 18th start of this season, his 9th on the road and the first of his career vs. Seattle.

Olson is looking to build off his winning start Sunday at home vs. the Angels. He picked up his 7th win giving up just two runs over six innings and throwing 97 pitches. Olson had worked to an ERA of 10.53 over his previous four starts.

Right-handed batters hit .295 off Olson, while lefties bat .298 and he gives up an average of .253 when working with runners in scoring position. The Orioles are 8-9 in Olson's 17 starts on the year.

He pitched to an ERA of 5.81 in June and he is 1-2, 8.77 in five starts in July. In eight road starts, he is 3-4, 6.81.

Olson's win on Sunday was just his second over his last nine starts. He has recorded 5 quality starts on the year.

Olson has never pitched vs. Seattle.

LHP Jarrod Washburn (5-9, 4.50) tonight will make his 21st start of this year, his 9th at home and his third of the season against the Orioles.

Washburn pitched eight innings, giving up just one run and four hits and got the win Sunday vs. Toronto. Washburn has allowed two runs or less in nine of his last 11 starts and is 3-3, 2.82 in that time.

The 33-year-old pitched to an ERA of 9.30 in May, but it was 2.93 in June and 2.67 in five July starts. However, the Mariners are just 6-14 this season when Washburn is their starter.
