Estrada released to make room for Milledge [link]

Derek Lowe was brilliant tonight against the Nationals, holding them to one hit in eight strong innings and the Dodgers hand Washington their fifth straight loss, 6-0.

Lowe gave up a fourth-inning double to Ronnie Belliard and walked Austin Kearns for the only two base runners he allowed. He retired the first 11 batters before giving up the hit and retired the last 13. Oh yeah, Lowe had two hits and an RBI.

Matt Kemp hit a 2-run homer in the Dodgers 3-run first inning and Nomar Garciaparra had two RBI, including his fifth home run of the season.

Odalis Perez lasted just four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and taking the loss. Perez falls to 3-8.

Willie Harris singled off reliever Joe Beimel in the ninth and Ryan Zimmerman walked, but Austin Kearns struck out to end the game. Washington had just four base runners all night.

The 6-0 loss is the 14th time the Nationals were shutout this season.

Washington wraps up their 9-game road trip Sunday afternoon with Jason Bergmann facing Clayton Kershaw.

Lowe on cruise control
Derek Lowe is making quick work of the Nationals tonight. He's allowed one hit and a walk. Only three of the 18 outs have been hit in the air and one was popped up to third.
6 IP, H, BB, 3 K.

Perez's short outing
Odalis Perez was just awful tonight. He didn't have command or control and got pounded in his four innings. Five of the eight hits he gave up were for extra-bases and opposing pitcher Derek Lowe had two singles off him.
4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 2 K. 75 pitches.

Odalis Perez talks about his outing with the media

Dodgers scoring, 4th inning
Los Angeles scored three times in the fourth to build a 6-0 lead.

Nomar Garciaparra's fifth home run of the season put the Dodgers up 4-0. Casey Blake, playing his first game for the Dodgers, followed with a double and scored on Angel Berroa's double. Derek Lowe's single scored Berroa to make it 6-0.

Perez thru 3 innings
Odalis Perez allowed the first three Dodgers to get hits and all three ended up scoring. Matt Kemp's 12th homer of the year gave LA a 2-0 lead. Russell Martin hit a double and scored on a sac fly. Perez has settled down since the 22-pitch first.
3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, K. 41 pitches.

Game Preview
Nationals (38-65) at Los Angeles (50-52)
It was déjà vu for John Lannan last night. He had another quality start, giving up three runs in sevens innings, but the offense backed him with just two runs, one while he was in the game, and the Nationals lost their fourth straight, 3-2.

Tonight, Washington sends Odalis Perez to face the Dodgers and try to snap their losing streak. LA counters with Derek Lowe

Pitching Match-Up

Odalis Perez

LHP Odalis Perez (3-7, 3.99) is coming off a win where he didn't have his best outing and ended his personal five-game winless streak. He gave up five runs on nine hits in five innings, but the offense scored 12 runs in the first four innings and cruised to the 15-6 win against the Braves in Atlanta.

Perez, who gave up three runs in the fourth, said he got tired and didn't have his legs from running the bases in the top of the fourth, when the Nationals scored six runs. Perez reached base in all three of his at bats and scored one run.

This will be the first start against his former team since May of 2001, when he was a member of the Braves. In that game, Perez tossed 7 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win. Perez was a member of the Dodgers from 2005-06, compiling an 11-12 record.

In his career vs. the Dodgers, Perez is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts. On the road this season, he is 3-3 with a 5.36 ERA in nine starts and has a 25-29 record with a 4.66 ERA after the All-Star game in his career.

RHP Derek Lowe (7-8, 3.97) is undefeated in his last three starts, going 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA, and he's 5-3 in his last 10 outings.

Lowe, who didn't pick up a ball in his 10 days off going into and coming out of the All-Star break, got off to a rocky start and gave up three first-inning runs in his last start against the Diamondbacks on July 20th. He received a no-decision in the Dodgers 6-5 win.

In 10 career games, four starts, against the Nationals, Lowe is 4-0 with three saves and a 3.58 ERA Last season, Lowe went 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against Washington. At Dodger Stadium, he is 5-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 starts.
