This and that leading into the All-Star break

Relaxing on defense
I have to say, I'm a little perplexed by our defense as of late. I would love to see the Nats fire the ball to the plate from the outfield when there is any remote chance of a play at the plate, instead of running the ball in. On ground balls, I would prefer a wheel turn and quick full arm throw by our middle infielders, instead of underhand tosses.

I think we need to add a little more urgency and speed to all of our throws on defense. You don't want to get the reputation of relaxing at any time on defense. Once a runner realizes this, moving from 1st to 3rd and from 2nd to home on short base hits will become the norm, and that puts added pressure on your pitching staff.

Here's a question: Any interest in Richie Sexson? The Mariners still owe him a bundle of money, $6.6 million. He would come cheap for the Nats. Right now, we know Wily Mo is struggling big time and things aren't getting better. You could say the same is going for Sexson. But maybe he needs a change of venue? Lots of teams might grab him too, the Indians, Mets, D-backs? Is he worthy of a pick up and drop off?

Power alert in the Minors
Leonard Davis is making it happen. No not that Loenard Davis, the big offensive guard from the Cardinals and Cowboys. This Leonard Davis tore up Potomac, likewise at Harrisburg, and gets his shot next in Columbus. He's 5'10", 195, bats left-handed and attended Fresno City College in California. The Nats got him in the 8th round of the 2004 draft. On Wednesday, the 3B/OF went 4-5 with a homer and 3 RBI in the Senators 9-0 win over New Britain. Davis hit 4 homers in 10 games in the Eastern League, this after smacking 14 homers at Potomac. He has now hit 56 homers in the Minors since 2004, and counting....

Time for an election?
How about my idea of bringing up James Madison and giving Teddy a break? Madison is only 252 years old and stands just 5-6, so he can move under the other presidents attempts at block outs, and he already has a great relationship with Jefferson.

The All-Star break
The All-Star break is a great time for players to get some rest and charge their batteries for the 2nd half of the season. Some are headed home to their families; some are headed to Bermuda; others still have work to do in rehabbing injuries (Nick Johnson has a serious hard cast on his arm that is cumbersome, but he is remaining positive). Aaron Boone will miss the ATL series after the All-Star break, but Jim Bowden is hoping Boone will be back for the Giants series early in the 2nd half.

I'll be the sideline reporter in Milwaukee in August--do you think I stand a chance at convincing the Brewers to let me ride down the yellow slide when the Nats hit a home run? Maybe I could just make my way out to the outfield, unsuspecting, and as soon as Jesus Flores cranks one, just jump down the slide! But SShhhhh. Don't tell anyone. Lets just plan this one on the down low.

Everyone have a great All-Star break, and lets gets ready for Atlanta!
