Zimmerman reinstated, Pena's season over
The Nationals recalled third baseman Ryan Zimmerman from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus and reinstated him from the 15-Day Disabled List on Tuesday. He should be in the line-up in tonight's series opener against the Giants at AT&T Park.
Zimmerman hit a combined .280 with three doubles, one home run and three RBI in six games during his rehab stints with Columbus and Single-A Potomac.
Prior to going on the disabled list with a small labral tear in his left shoulder on June 3rd, he was batting .278 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 27 RBI in 50 games for the Nationals.
Earlier Tuesday, Nationals outfielder Wily Mo Pena had successful surgery performed on his left shoulder by Dr. Timothy Kremchek in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Kremchek repaired a significant partial tear of his rotator cuff, as well as a tear and fraying of his posterior labrum.
Pena, who had been battling the injury all season, was having a miserable first half of the season. He was batting just .205 with two homers and 10 RBI before landing on the DL.
Pena will be placed in a sling for approximately 3 weeks, at which time a formal rehab program will begin. Pena will be out for 4-6 months, but is expected to be ready for Spring Training 2009.
