Bergesen and Bascom (updated)
| | Comments (4)

Double-A Bowie's Brad Bergesen failed again tonight to win his 16th game. He allowed three runs and five hits in four innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. The Baysox trail Binghamton, 4-1, in the seventh.

Nolan Reimold is 2-for-3. Matt Wieters, serving as the designated hitter, is 1-for-3.

Single-A Frederick's Tim Bascom had another good start, holding Salem to two runs over sixt innings in a 9-2 victory. (minorleaguebaseball.com's boxscore has him going eight innings, but the Keys' press release says six. I'm trusting them).

Brandon Snyder, back in the lineup as the designated hitter, went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. He's batting .309.

Billy Rowell was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. But Paul Winterling topped them both by going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and four RBIs.

Hey Roch. Does it seem like from what you've heard, that Billy Rowell is starting to "get it" Is he improving?

What I hear more than anything is he's still only 19 and it's way too soon to label him a bust. But there are serious questions about whether he can play third base. -Roch

Obviously, Tillman and Arrieta are the "real deal" but Jim Callis downplayed the ability of Bergeson and Hernandez as major league starters in a chat of his. One person's opinion but a well respected talent evaluator. Do you know what others outside the organization think of their chances?

Hernandez is viewed as the higher-ceiling prospect, for sure. Big-time strikeout numbers, but working on command. Bergesen more of a strike thrower, but doesn't his stuff, I'm told, isn't as good. In the end, it's all about winning games, not lighting up the radar gun. We'll see how they do in Triple-A next year- Roch

We've all gotta start giving Snyder some credit now. This time last year he looked like he might go the way of a lot of disappointing 1st Rd picks, but, ever since last year's late season and Winter Leagues, he's been steadily improving more and more. If he were still at catcher he might have more overall value and the jury is still out if he'll have above-average value at 1B, but, I think of it this way: If he were coming into the draft this season he might still be a 1st round pick out of college and a young age 21. I think he's an interesting guy to keep an eye on. If the power develops, he might be an above-average ML bat. If it doesn't he might be a solid bench player. Right now based on his doubles power I'm not sure if the power is quite there but we'll see.

Right now I am hoping for a similar pattern from Rowell. There is some real power potential there. If, say, Rowell starts to turn it on next season, then he'll be younger than Wieters and a true stud prospect as well at age 20.

have you noticed or seen Kenny Moreland and do you know how the orioles got him( im Guessing the Draft but this is his first year and on the orioles webpage i didnt see his name under the draft results) just asking cus he has only like 6 walks in 70 innings and like 60 some strickouts which is amasoning to me he must have some serious control

I'll check. - Roch
