Bergmann pounded for 10 runs in 3 innings, Nats fall 12-0
Jason Bergmann, who was outstanding in his previous start, didn't last long enough for the fans, mostly from New York, to settle in their seats before digging a 10-0 hole and taking an early shower.
Bergmann gave up 10 runs, six earned, on eight hits and six walks. He gave up eight runs, only four earned, in the third inning alone. Bergmann struck out one and threw 89 pitches, 51 in the third frame.
The 12-0 loss is the Nationals sixth straight. It's the fourth time this season they have lost six or more in a row.
Trailing 2-0 entering that miserable third, Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis each had RBI singles to make it 4-0. After a walk loaded the bases, Bergmann walked opposing start John Maine to force in the third run of the inning.
Jose Reyes followed by hitting a ball to Cristian Guzman, which looked to be a sure double play. Guzman's vision was blocked by Brian Schneider and the ball went off his glove and thru his legs into left field, allowing two more runs to score. Guzman was charged with his 13th error of the year.
Three batters later, Carlos Delgado, the 11th batter of the inning, walked to force in another run and the Mets have an 8-0 lead. Carlos Beltran then doubled home two more runs and it's 10-0.
The Most amazing thing about the inning was that Manny Acta never got anyone up in the bullpen. Bergmann was left out there to fend for himself. By the time the inning was finished, Bergmann was torched for eight runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks in the third. The 10 runs were the most Bergmann gave up this season.
New York added two more runs in the fifth on Daniel Murphy's 2-run homer off Jesus Colome. It was Murphy's second dinger of the season.
Washington couldn't get anything against Mets starter John Maine. They had just one hit, a second-inning single from Lastings Milledge, which extended his hitting streak to 14-games, in five innings. Maine walked four and struck out six.
The Nationals managed just four hits, all singles, and only two runners reached second base. The only time they had multiple runners on base in one inning was the fifth. With 1-out, Maine walked Willie Harris and two batters later Emilio Bonifacio, but Guzman grounded into a force out to end the inning.
Brian Stokes tossed four scoreless innings to earn his frist save of the season.
The Nationals were shut out for the 18th time this season and third in their last six games.

Postgame Notes
Ryan Langerhans, who pinch-hit and struck out in the fifth, left the game with tightness in his right lower back. He's listed as day-to-day.
Emilio Bonifacio went 1-2 with two walks, his first two of the season, and snapped an 0-23 skid. He's now batting .227.
New York's 8-run third matches a season high for runs allowed in an inning by Washington this year. The Phillies scored eight, in the sixth, on May 23rd.
