After batting practice, Daniel Cabrera sat in the video room with pitching coach Rick Kranitz and watched tape of his last start. You can't say he's not trying to get better.

I see that Radhames Liz still hasn't broken his habit of chasing pop ups. He hustled after a ball along the first base line that clearly belonged to Kevin Millar, who made the catch to end the second inning and strand two runners, but ended up with the proverbial ice cream cone.

Liz limited the damage in the first inning, allowing only one run after the first three batters reached base. He got a big double play grounder from Alex Rodriguez and struck out Jason Giambi on a 96 mph fastball. He froze Xavier Nady with a slider to begin the second inning.

Derek Jeter's bloop single in the first was the 2,500th hit of his career - matching the number of supermodels that he's dated.

OK, back to first-round pick Brian Matusz. He was just introduced to the crowd before the top of the third inning and slipped on his Orioles jersey again. He was greeted by polite applause, like he just sank a six-foot putt. I was hoping for much more, but I guess people from New York haven't heard of him.

One of his biggest thrills today was meeting Jim Palmer behind the batting cage. The entire day put a smile on his face that won't soon fade.

"It was a great experience," he said. "I've been waiting for this for a while. It's definitely been a long summer, but it's a process. I'm happy to be part of the ballclub now and to make it out here to Camden Yards, which is just a great stadium. I love everything about it so far. It's been a lot of fun up to this point."

Asked about his timetable for reaching the majors, Matusz said: "I never really set goals of where I want to be. It's more setting goals to work hard and put myself in a situation where I can be in the big leagues in a few years. Just put myself in a situation where I'd be able to compete at that level."

I also liked this quote: "Obviously, I've been playing at the college level, and one thing I'm excited about is pitching to wood bats. Just being able to do it every day and handle the travel, the media, everything about it. It will be nice not having to go to classrooms, going to class on the day you have to pitch. I had to pitch on Fridays, so I'd have to go to class and then have to get ready for a start. I'm looking forward to not having to do that and just focusing on baseball, working out and getting myself in shape."

I asked Joe Jordan, director of scouting, if he could compare Matusz to another pitcher, and he went with the Phillies' Cole Hamels.

"Cole Hamels, I think, is a fair comparison as far as the type of stuff and the arsenal. For me, that's somewhat of a good comparison," Jordan said.

Matusz has heard it before. Many times.

"I've been compared to him a lot the last few years [because of] the way Hamels works off his changeup and his great breaking ball," Matusz said. "He works in the low 90s and he's able to spot up all three of those pitches. That's one thing that made me successful in college is that I was able to throw four pitches for strikes. I think that's why I get compared to Cole."

Another Brian has joined the Single-A Frederick Keys. Catcher Brian Valicka, a Frederick native who attended Urbana High School, takes the roster spot that belonged to outfielder Danny Figueroa (hand injury).
