Flores earns Heart and Hustle Award
| | Comments (0)

Jesus Flores earned the Heart and Hustle Award this week. It was presented to him by former Washington Senators pitcher Jim Hannan. He is the Chairman of the Board for the MLB Players Alumni Association.

Flores will now be among 30 players up for the National Award. Jim told me he was very impressed with the way Flores handled being sent down to the Minors at the beginning of the season. Past national winners include David Eckstein and Craig Biggio.

When I spoke with Flores about the award and the past winners, he looked at me with wide eyes and said, "Wow, what an honor!" This is a classy catcher with just the right character to lead the Nationals to a bright future.

Speaking of a bright future, how about the work of Elijah Dukes, Emilio Bonifacio and Alberto Gonzalez on Friday night? The two newest Nats were a combined 2-6 with 2 runs scored, a double an RBI, a stolen base and 2 walks. Dukes was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

And, did you know?--The Nationals have the youngest 25-man roster in the Majors with an average age of 27 years, according to our friends at the Elias Sports Bureau.
