Gaither making progress in return from ankle injury
When Jonathan Ogden retired this offeseason, Jared Gaither was expected to take over for the future Hall of Famer at his left tackle position. To this point, Gaither hasn't goten much of a chance to do so.
Gaither went down early in training camp with a right ankle injury, and returned to the practice field for the first time earlier this week. His return couldn't come at a better time, as the Ravens' offensive line has gotten banged around a bit and is trying to build some chemistry leading into the regular season opener on Sept. 7.
Gaither's potential has been well documented, and now that he is working his way back to health, he will have a chance to show what he can do.
The Ravens signed Chad Slaughter during training camp, a free agent who was pouring concrete before he got the call from GM Ozzie Newsome, and Slaugher has filled in well, but the job is there for Gaither to take. The 6-foot-9, 350 pounder needs to stay focused and capitalize on the opportunity.
