Instant replay begins Thursday, with mixed thoughts
Instant replay in Major League Baseball has arrived and there are mixed feelings about whether is should even be used. Some feel baseball, which has been around for over a hundred years, should stay the way it's been; let the umpires decide the game. Others feel it's about time instant replay was put in place; joining the other three major sports.
Beginning Thursday, three new series; Minnesota at Oakland, Texas at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Phildelphia at Chicago Cubs, will use instant replay. Baseball Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig said replay review should commence when a new series begins. The Nationals and Braves will have it ready on Friday when they start their three-game series.
Replay will only be used on home runs calls; to determine if they are fair or foul, whether the ball left the playing field, or whether the ball has been subject to fan interference. The decision to use instant replay will be made by the umpire crew chief, who will also determine if the call should be reversed.
All games will be monitored and staffed by an expert technician and either an umpire supervisor or a former umpire at Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLB.com) headquarters in New York.
A television monitor and a secure telephone link to MLB.com have been installed at every Major League ballpark. If the crew chief determines that instant replay review is appropriate, then he will call the MLB.com technician, who will transmit the most appropriate video footage to the crew chief and the umpire on site. The people at MLB.com headquarters will not have direct communication with any umpire at the ballpark.
The decision to reverse a call will be at the sole discretion of the crew chief. Once instant replay is invoked, neither club will be permitted to further argue the decision. A player, manager or coach who argues will be treated in the same manner as one who argues balls and strikes.
