Kory Casto optioned to Triple-A Columbus
Kory Casto, utility infielder for the Nationals, was optioned to Triple-A Columbus after last night's 5-4 loss in the series opener with the Phillies. He was hitting .193 with seven doubles, a homer, 10 RBI and 16 walks in 49 games with the Nationals this season.
Casto knew his role with the Nationals; come off the bench and pinch-hit or play one of the corner infield positions when Manny Acta wanted to go give a starter a day off. He never complained and did what was asked of him. Expect to see Casto back in a Nationals uniform when the roster expands on September 1st.
To fill Casto's spot on the 25-man roster, Washington added shortstop Anderson Hernandez. Hernandez was acquired from the Mets, completing Sunday's trade that sent right-handed pitcher Luis Ayala to New York.
Also added to the roster is right-handed pitcher Marco Estrada. Estrada, filling the void left by Ayala's departure, was promoted from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday night.
Estrada was 9-6 with a 3.09 ERA in 25 starts between Double-A Harrisburg and Columbus. He will have to make adjustments to get used to his new role as a reliever.
