Long way from over
The Orioles have scored seven runs in the first five innings today, and they'll probably need a few more to steal a win from the Rays.
Manager Dave Trembley will have to dip into his bullpen and try to build that bridge to his closer - we'll assume that's Jim Johnson.
We won't see Fernando Cabrera today, but he's still an Oriole. The Associated Press is reporting that he was fined an undisclosed amount - isn't it always undisclosed? - for flipping the ball to Trembley while leaving the mound in the sixth inning last night.
Reminds me when Doug Jones flipped off the fans while walking to the dugout after another poor outing. Anyone else remember that night?
I was one of the reporters waiting at his locker after the game. Good times.
Melvin Mora avoided the disabled list, but I'm not surprised. With rosters expanding, there's no need to put him on the shelf for 15 days.
The Orioles have some quality minor league pitchers making starts tonight: Brad Bergesen and David Hernandez in a doubleheader for Double-A Bowie; Tim Bascom at Single-A Frederick; Sean Gleason at Single-A Delmarva.

I remember the game with Doug Jones.
We went the next night and were ready to boo.
just turned off the game while i was eating dinner, didn't want to ruin my taste. the O's need to bring up every pitcher that hasn't had a chance yet and sit down the entire existing staff for the the next month. Dave might even be able to enjoy his dinner once.
Next time, Trembley should leave FCab out there to rot. It's one thing to be competitive and it is another thing altogether to be a loser . If need be , remove one fielder per batter until he has to chase em down himself. His era won't go away.
That sort of stuff is inexcusable especially under those circumstances .
Times like this, I dont like you being right.
I'm not at all defending F Cab's showing up his manager, but I think I have a pretty good idea of where his frustration originated. Almost two weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon in Detroit, F Cab pitched three brilliant, shutout innings. A few nights later, with the game on the line against the Red Sox, Kam Mickolio was brought in and proceeded to blow the lead. Palmer even commented "Where was Fernando Cabrera?" Well Cabrera was brought into the game in the ninth inning of that game and proceeded to give up back-to-back homeruns. You coud tell he wasn't focused, probably pissed off that he wasn't used earlier(I know I was), and just seemed to be flipping the ball up there.
Again I'm not defending his actions, but sometimes as a manager or coach you can create negative situations, like this one, when your players internally question your moves.
I saw that game too. Beginners luck? Hopefully he'll regain that form. Hard to believe Tampa Bay as a first place team.
Dylan - I'm not sure you can say he's been a disaster since his start against the Angels. Or were you expecting that kind of performance each time out? He pitched solidly against the White Sox in his last start. He's certainly been better than Olson, Liz, Burres, or Cabrera.
Why Sarfate against Pena? You have Castillo who has ben somewhat effective throwing from underneath against lefthanded hitters.
I got to see most of Chris Waters' first start when it was broadcast locally here in Southern California. It was a sight to behold.
I don't know what happened to that guy. He might be trapped in a restroom stall at Angels Stadium. But whoever they're running out in his stead is a disaster, game after game.
