Lou Montanez Honored
Red-hot hitting Lou Montanez of the Bowie Baysox today was named the player of the week in the Eastern League for the week ending Sunday. Last week Montanez, a 26-year-old outfielder, hit .581 (18-31) with 3 homers, 15 RBI, 13 runs and a slugging percentage of 1.065.
Montanez is having a monster year batting .334-26-97 and currently leads the Eastern League in batting average, homers, RBI, hits, extra-base hits, slugging and runs. He is trying to become the 5th player in league history to win the Triple Crown.
Montanez and the Baysox scored 41 runs on 54 hits in a three-game sweep at Altoona this past weekend. Friday night Montanez hit for the cycle, going 5-6 with 8 RBI.
"I think the stars aligned for one night," Montanez said. "I did it in order so once I got the triple I knew I had probably two more at bats coming. I told the coaches I was going to swing for the fences this one time and they said 'go for it.' So I hit one in the left-field bleachers."
Montanez was the third pick in the first-round in 2000 by the Cubs out of a Miami high school. He signed with the O's before the 2007 season in part because he knew Dave Trembley and Andy MacPhail from his Cubs days.
Right now he's part of a formidable middle of the Bowie order that includes Nolan Reimold and Matt Wieters.
"They protect me and I protect them," Montanez said. "We probably have the most dangerous middle of the order in Double A."
