Marcus Jones, Nats 11th-round draft pick, has local ties
Outfielder Marcus Jones, the Nationals 11th-round selection in this year's Draft, has ties to the Washington DC area. He grew up in District and went to The Landon School for Boys in Bethesda, Maryland.
Jones was drafted in the 38th-round of the 2005 Draft by the Nationals, when he was in high school, but he decided to attend school at North Carolina State University. It was a good choice for Jones, who not only improved his position by 27 rounds, but he also got the chance to mature and play on an everyday basis by his sophomore season.
Jones started six games as a reserve freshman, batting .289 with three RBI. By his sophomore year, he was a regular in the outfield for the Wolfpack and hit .321 with 33 RBI and 29 runs in 58 games, 50 starts.
As a junior at NC State, Jones hit .318 with 13 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 49 RBI in 63 games. He scored 45 runs and had a .400 on-base percentage.
Prior to tonight's game against the Rockies, Jones watched the Nationals take batting practice and talked to the media about waiting for the phone call before the signing deadline expired.
