Expanding roster for Jones
Adam Jones has heard himself described many ways. He's a five-tool player, an elite prospect, a phenom.
He's always been content with "major league center fielder," but he can't control the hype.
Jones has given himself a new title: September call-up.
That's how Jones described himself to me earlier today. He joked that I got "the exclusive," but you probably already know that his foot is pain-free and he's ready to play. He's not hiding that information from anybody.
He's been taking batting practice and running sprints, but he still must prove to manager Dave Trembley that he can run the bases without any discomfort or restrictions. That'll be the last task, performed either later today or most likely when the team's in St. Petersburg, Fla. Friday to play the Tampa Bay Rays.
Jones also will do some throwing from the outfield, firing to the bases and home plate, and chase fly balls. So far, he's only taken a few steps to make the catches.
"I'm not really looking forward to it," he said. "It's all stuff I've done too many times already."
Boring stuff, but necessary if he wants to come off the disabled list, which is expected to happen once rosters expand on Sept. 1. The Orioles will be in Boston. Jones wants to be in the lineup.
Jones understands why the Orioles are being careful with him. He doesn't want to rush back and have a chronic foot problem for the rest of his career. But he's feeling good and eager to play again. And he will - as a high-profile September call-up.

That was a joke son...
sigh...
Notice how I called Jones a retread?
Sigh...
Markakis shy??? I hear he is cutting a swath (on one side of the tracks anyway) that B Anderson would be proud of....
"What will this do to Paytons at bats?"
!?
It will replace them (hopefully for good!)
I thought this team was rebuilding? How can you be rebuilding if you just keep bringing up the same retreads time after time? What will this do to Payton's at bats?
Really refreshing to hear of a young player that eager to step back on the diamond.
so why ruch jones back. why not wait a couple more weeks. much better to play it real real safe than risk another injury because everyone is anxiuos for him to come back. it's not like the team is going anywhere. let montanez play some more. we could have a realy nice outfield next year with montanez, scott, jones and markakis.
Roch,
Just curious, seems like a great attitude, whose got the best on the team? I heard Luke is awsome, Nick is shy, Adam is outgoing. An eclectic outfeild hu?

3 vastly different personalities, to say the least. But all really good guys. - Roch
Again, sorry I rarely post, but its becoming impossible to watch these guys. Yes I understand we are "rebuilding" or whatever but I'm trying not to be depressed for the remainder of the summer. Sorry but fall and winter depress the bajesus out of me. I'm a summertime girl all the way. I honestly can't take the losing. Yes it's fun to watch the O's tack on run after run, but the pitching is so bad I turn the channel every time the O's are on the field.
Brian Burres should be sent back down to the minors even when the rosters expand. Let another young kid pitch. It can't get any worse.
I truely can't wait to not see Payton's name in the line-up. What about poor Lou? He can't even take away time from Payton, he'll have no shot against Adam.
Better have someone watch Payton the next few days.... he might Tanya Harding Jones...
It's gonna be good to see Sugar Bear back in the line-up!
