Nationals, 1st round Draft pick Crow not close to agreeing on deal
With Friday's deadline for signing players selected in the 2008 First Year Player Draft fast approaching, the Nationals and first-round pick, right-handed pitcher Aaron Crow, are not close to agreeing on a contract.
If Washington is not able to sign Crow, the Nationals will receive two top 10 picks and Crow will go back into the 2009 Draft. According to several sources, Crow wants a Major League contract and $8 to $10 million. The Nationals don't want to give that kind of money or contract.
Since Senior Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden has been with the Nationals, Washington has never given a Major League contract to their first-round Draft picks; Ryan Zimmerman, first baseman Chris Marrero and pitchers Colton Willems or Ross Detwiler.
Washington, who has signed nine of their 10 first-round picks, feels Crow should get a deal close to what they gave to Detwiler, their 2007 first-round pick, a $2.15 million signing bonus.
Prior to Tuesday's game against the Mets, Bowden declined to talk about the negotiations, but did discuss how the team will move forward if Crow is not signed.
