Pitching help - sort of (updated)
The Orioles purchased pitcher Scott Chiasson's contract from the Mexican League and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
If you haven't been following his career, Chiasson turns 31 tomorrow. He went 2-1 with 26 saves and a 1.90 ERA in 47 games with Tigres de Quintana Roo.
(Is that the name of a team, or a character who lives in the Hundred Acre Woods?)
Chiasson turned in 44 scoreless outings, including 13 straight before the Orioles grabbed him. Opponents hit .190 against him.
Here's the new stuff since I first filed this entry: Chiasson is a right-hander who spent parts of two seasons with the Cubs, the last being 2002. He's 1-1 with a 11.12 ERA in 10 major league games. The Royals drafted him in the fifth round in 1998 out of Eastern Connecticut State.
To make room on the roster, infielder Travis Brown was assigned to Double-A Bowie.
Meanwhile, three Aberdeen IronBirds were chosen to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Aug. 19 in Troy, N.Y.: left-hander Cole McCurry, catcher Caleb Joseph and outfielder Robbie Widlansky.
While we all obsess over first-round picks, you can find the occasional gem much further down the draft chart. McCurry, who was taken in the 43rd round last year out of Tennessee-Wesleyan, is 7-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 11 starts. He went 6-0 with a 1.31 ERA in July.

Well, I guess Chiasson is better than nothing. Can we replace him with Walker? Is he a left or right-handed guy? What's his delivery like?

I updated the entry. He's right-handed. Never seen him pitch, but the name was familiar. Turns out he spent some time in the majors with the Cubs in 2001 and 2002. - Roch
McCurry has been very good at Aberdeen, but I'm having a hard time forgetting his start of the year in Delmarva where he went 2-6 with a 6.51 ERA in 12 starts & 1 relief appearance. He still showed a strong K/BB ratio, but he was getting hit around. For someone with undominant "stuff" who turns 23 in September, I don't see him as a late draft find to be excited about - not when he's still playing short season ball. The noticable fly ball tendencies aren't helping him either (0.68 GO/AO in 2008 & 0.66 in 2007). At this point, he has more of a chance of being minor league "filler" than a prospect of note.
There are certain burdens one must bear in life. And if you are an O's fan, it goes without saying that you must gnash your teeth up until midnight on the 14th or 15th of August, whichever it is as you await to see if the number 1 gets signed .
Brutal but predictable.
re: blog name, how about:
get off the roch! cause ramon seems like he's smokin something.
Well Rodrigo came from the Mexican League. We basically need a longman arm like that about now.
What is the scouting report on McCurry? Good stuff?
English Name: Quintana Roo Tigers
Location: Cancun, Quintana Roo
I'm sure he loves the chance to play in the majors, but playing your home games in Cancun can't be too bad!
The second coming of Rodrigo Lopez.
By the way, I'm not Alice Sweet from Norfolk - I'm actually a guy, too. And no I'm not confused about anything - the name's in reference to the old Earl Weaver "Manager's Corner" interview where he bad-mouthed everyone from Terry Crowley to ... Alice Sweet from Norfolk for her question about tomato plants. Sure you knew about that though..
Ryan raises a key question: if Matusz does not sign do we get a #5 pick IN ADDITION to our regular #10-15 first round pick or instead of that pick. If it's the latter than we do in fact lose a first pick and it is a major loss. Either way, we would lose a year so I would appreciate Jordan and MacPhail not pretending to be so cavalier about it.
Tic toc...

Teams are awarded a pick very close to the same slot next year. - Roch
Interesting.
Just wondering - Does Andy MacPhail have an obsession with the Cubs?
Almost every player he's picked up has some kind of connection with the Cubs.
I know you secretly play a doctor, but if you play GM, what roster moves would you make for the rest of the season?
Arrieta goes tomorrow or Saturday In China. Davey Johnson is the manager. The kid really looks good, so far. TV - MSNBC. Check.
any news on chorye spoone if he out for the year
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't heard anything about him being done for the year, but I also haven't asked in a while. Will check. - Roch
Ever wonder how many players are in our minor leagues hoping to get to the big club? 8 teams - 252 players. Biggest Mickolio 6'9" 255. Mahoney 1b. 6'5 - 255. Youngest - 4 or 5 17 year olds.
They assigned him to Norfolk. Someone else is coming here to take Sarfate's spot.
he had some really good minor league numbers and ine good year of majors
Really? The Mexican League? Really??
where do they look to next, California Penal League?
Rick "Radhames" Vaughn when you need him.
"Wild Thing. You make my heart sing. You walk everything."
i recently went thru the Mexican League rosters... you know, for fun. we live on the edge, here in cleveland...
also playing Liga Mexicana de Beisbol... Luis Matos, who is playing in Yucatan (not to be confused with a former Tampa hotspot called the Yucatan Liquor Stand, though he may be there, too, my Spanish is spotty, at best).
Geronimo Gil. Dare I say we ask for an even exchange?
Ruben Rivera. Really? he's still playing baseball? And not for a senior league? Is he really not as old as I think he is?
Benji Gil. How soon can he get to Baltimore?
some other randoms, but most of them only interested myself and likely no one else.
Go Kit Pellow, honing in on the MexLg Triple Crown!
