Ravens GameBlog: Ravens beat Pats 16-15 in preseason opener
John Harbaugh's head coaching career got off to a solid start Thursday night, as his Ravens beat the defending AFC Champion New England Patriots 16-15.
Fullback Le'Ron McClain had a one-yard touchdown run, Matt Stover and Piotr Czech combined for three field goals, and cornerback Fabian Washington had two interceptions as the Ravens jumped out to a 16-3 lead and held off the Pats late.
The win did little to clear up Baltimore's quarterback controversy, as none of the three signal callers played especially well. Kyle Boller got the start, and played the smoothest game of the three QB's, going 11-for-15 for 102 yards, but also threw an interception into triple-coverage and lost a fumble.
Troy Smith went 5-for-12 for 74 yards. He looked shaky at times, but made some plays down the field and kept the pass rush at bay with his quick feet. Harbaugh announced that Smith will get the start next week against the Minnesota Vikings.
Joe Flacco struggled in his first NFL game. The rookie out of Delaware was sacked twice and lost a fumble. He finished 0-for-3 and looked like he had yet to adjust to the speed of the NFL.
Washington, who the Ravens acquired in a trade with the Raiders, looked like he could prove to be a key addition. The Ravens now have depth at corner, with Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle seemingly slotted into the two starting spots. Rolle has yet to begin practicing with the team, as he missed most of training camp due to the death of his father.
Rolle and Washington will likely battle for playing time, but regardless of who earns the start, Washington's addition will provide much-needed security in the secondary. Washington will miss the first regular season game of the season, however, as he was suspended for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy [link].
The Patriots trailed by 13 in the third quarter but battled back on two Stephen Gostkowski field goals and a LaMont Jordan touchdown. They had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but C.J Jones fumbled a punt return inside his own 20. New England got another chance with under three minutes remaining, but turned the ball over on downs.
The Ravens will head back to Westminster for another week of training camp, with their next preseason game coming Saturday the 16th at home against Minnesota.

Flacco looked like a rookie
The quarterback of the future's NFL career got off to an inauspicious start.
Joe Flacco finally got his first snaps as a Raven, but things did not work out as he had planned. Flacco's first play resulted in an incompletion, and on his second snap, he was sacked by Pierre Woods and fumbled.
Woods recovered the loose ball, and the Pats capitalized, as LaMont Jordan punched it in from a yard out. New England went for a two-point conversion, but could not convert, and the Ravens lead 16-15 late in the fourth.
Troy Smith with his first NFL catch?
We all know that Ravens QB Troy Smith can throw the ball, and the former Heisman Trophy winner can wear defenses out with his ability to run as well. But did Smith just show coaches that he could be counted on as a wide receiver as well?
Mid-way through the fourth quarter, Patriots QB Kevin O'Connell rolled out of the pocket, and with the defense breathing down his neck, O'Connell threw the ball away, firing it low and towards the Ravens' sideline. Out of nowhere, Smith dove to his right, dropping to his knees and bringing in the pass.
John Harbaugh might not have liked seeing his potential starting quarterback diving on the sidelines to make a catch, but the Ravens near Smith sure did, laughing and patting the QB on the back.
4th quarter update
It was a slow third quarter, as both teams started to empty their benches. The Ravens still have a 16-6 lead.
Prescott Burgess and Robert McCune, two reserve linebackers, have left the field with injuries. Nothing has been released about their status.
We're now in the fourth quarter and Joe Flacco is likely to get his first NFL snap pretty soon.
Ray at his best
You've got to love Ray Lewis. Not only can the man play, but he can be a fantastic interview.
During the third quarter, in an interview on the sidelines, Lewis was asked about his conditioning and how his body feels. Ray's response?
"My body is freaking awesome right now."
The man is one of a kind.
Washington with another pick
An all-around impressive first half ended on a positive note, with Fabian Washington grabbing his second interception of the game. We're now under way in the third quarter.
Washington, who has been suspended for the first regular season game of the season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy [link], jumped the route ran by Patriots wide receiver Matt Slater, and ripped the ball out of the rookie's hands.
A Le'Ron McClain 1-yard touchdown run and two Matt Stover field goals have the Ravens on top.
Boller out, Smith in
The first half is winding down, and Troy Smith is now under center for Baltimore.
Kyle Boller's night is over, having gone 11-for-15 for 102 yards, with an INT and a fumble. He looked sharp on the first drive of the game, but showed some poor decision making later in the half, telegraphing a pass that was picked off by Shawn Crable.
Stephen Gostkowski and Matt Stover traded field goals late in the half. Stover has converted from 42 and 44 yards tonight.
Defense looking solid
Not that this is breaking news, but the Ravens defense is very talented, even when Ed Reed and Ray Lewis aren't on the field.
The defensive unit has looked very sharp through a quarter and a half, with the front seven putting pressure on New England QB's Matt Cassel and Matt Gutierrez, and Fabian Washington shining in the secondary.
Reed is still working his way back from an injury, and Lewis played just one series tonight. That hasn't slowed the rest of the defense, as the Ravens already have two sacks, one from Nick Greisen and the other coming from Dwan Edwards, and Washington picked up an interception.
Figurs and McClain put Ravens up 10-0
A Yamon Figurs 52-yard punt return set the Ravens up inside the New England 3 yard line, and Le'Ron McClain turned it into seven points.
Figurs brought in a Chris Hansen punt, made some jukes, and turned it up the sideline before stepping out of bounds at the Patriots' 2. McClain punched it in on his second attempt, giving the Ravens a 10-0 lead over the defending AFC Champs.
Kyle Boller is 11-for-15 so far, with a fumble and an INT.
Ex-Terp on the field for New England
Former Maryland Terrapin LaMont Jordan has made an appearance for the Pats. Jordan, who is in his eighth year out of UMD, played his first four seasons for the New York Jets before signing with the Oakland Raiders.
He started all 14 games he played for the Raiders in 2005, and played well, rushing for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. He struggled the last two seasons, however, and signed with the Patriots this offseason as a backup to Laurence Maroney.
Boller turns it over, gets it right back
After leading a sharp scoring drive on his first possession, Kyle Boller fumbled on his second, with Ty Warren bringing in the loose ball. Boller was under pressure, tried to avoid the rush, and had the ball knocked out.
He didn't have to stress about it too long, however, as new Raven Fabian Washington picked off Matt Cassel two plays later, giving Baltimore the ball back on their own 23.
Matt Stover's 42-yard field goal is the only scoring so far.
Rice getting lots of action
Ray Rice is getting a chance to show what he can do. The rookie running back has already touched the ball nine times, picking up 12 yard on five carries, and catching four passes out of the backfield for 17 yards.
He also apparently needs to get re-fitted for his helmet. Rice lost his lid twice in a span of four plays.
Mason limps off
After bringing in his third reception in the game's first seven minutes, Derrick Mason limped off with what seemed to be a left leg injury. This is exactly what John Harbaugh was hoping to avoid today, especially on the offensive side of the ball, where the Ravens already have injuries to their starting running back and tight end.
Ravens on the board early
Kyle Boller looked pretty smooth on his first drive of the season. He lead the Ravens down the field on 8 plays, covering 57 yards in 4:01. Boller was 5-for-6 for 56 yards, including a 21-yard completion to Derrick Mason on the first play from scrimmage. Matt Stover connected on a 42-yard field goal to put the Ravens on top.
No surprise here: Tom Brady will not play for the Pats. Matt Cassel is under center to start the game for New England. Baltimore held Cassel to a quick 3-and-out on New England's first possession.

Game Preview:
Baltimore Ravens vs. New England Patriots
The Baltimore Ravens will open the John Harbaugh era in New England tonight, as the first-year head coach will lead his team into Gillette Stadium for a matchup with the defending AFC Champion Patriots.
The big news coming into the game, and really throughout all of training camp, is the battle for the starting quarterback job. Kyle Boller will get the nod tonight, and he will have the first chance to distance himself from the competition -- Troy Smith and Joe Flacco.
Expect most big names to see action for no more than a quarter, with the exception of Boller, who Harbaugh said will likely play for the majority of the first half.
Here are a few things to keep an eye on tonight:
Ray Rice
With Willis McGahee nursing a sore knee, Rice will get the start at running back tonight. The rookie out of Rutgers has gotten a ton of reps in camp because of the injuries to McGahee, Allen Patrick and P.J. Daniels, and Harbaugh has been impressed with his durability and tenacity. He also has shown quick feet and the ability to break a big run.
The Patriots will also be resting most of their starters, so Rice will not have to match up against their first-team defense, but it will be interesting to see how the 5-foot-8 running back fares against athletes much bigger and stronger than those he faced in college.
The Offensive Line
The retirement of Jonathan Ogden this offseason and the injuries to offensive tackles Jared Gaither and Adam Terry have left the O-line very thin and inexperienced.
The Ravens signed Chad Slaughter to provide some insurance, and the 6-foot-8, 340 pound tackle has done an admirable job thus far. Slaughter was working construction when the Ravens contacted him, but he has been plugged into the starting left tackle spot, and has held his own in camp. The coaching staff will be interested in how he handles a live pass rush tonight.
Coaches will also have their eyes on rookie tackle Oniel Cousins, who has potential, but is still very raw.
With a still unproven QB in Boller and two young quarterbacks in Smith and Flacco, the Ravens will need their offensive line to hold strong and let their signal-callers adjust to a new offense under Cam Cameron.
Injuries
The most important thing to keep an eye on tonight is the overall health of the Ravens.
The number of injuries so far in camp has been off the charts. Chris McAlister, Ed Reed, McGahee, Gaither, Terry, Todd Heap, Mark Clayton, Kelly Gregg, Trevor Pryce, and Haloti Ngata are just a few of the Ravens who have been banged up thus far, and Harbaugh can ill-afford to lose another key contributor.
While Kyle Boller having the game of his life would be a fantastic thing, having everyone walk out of Gillette Stadium in one piece might be even more important.

Tiki Barber was a generous 5 foot 10
KatieKat,
Thanks for the comment and the kind words.
I think Rice can be a solid NFL running back. His size is definitely an issue, as not many 5-foot-8 running backs make it in the NFL, but he has great determination and the coaches love his work ethic. I think a lot of times, guys who are undersized have the mentality that they have to work harder than other players and have the drive to prove their doubters wrong. This seems to be the case with Ray.
He runs real hard, and he's got surprising strength for his size, which allows him to pick up extra yardage after getting hit. Coach Harbaugh also mentioned that although Ray is a rookie, the number of carries that he got in college makes him more NFL-ready than most first-year guys.
With Willis McGahee's history of injuries, look for Rice to get plently of chances to show what he's made of this season.

First of all thanks for all the great Orioles and now Ravens coverage... How impactful do you think Ray Rice will be in the NFL?
I spent many games watching him play at Rutgers and always thought he would be able to make the transition to the pro game. Your thoughts?
