Speculation on Friday's starter
| | Comments (3)

We'll know by the end of tonight's game who will be the Orioles starter for the series opener against the Yankees this Friday. Dave Trembley said he'll make an announcement in his post game press conference.

Popular belief [which is known to be dead wrong] is that Radhames Liz will be called up from AAA Norfolk.

Liz has found his command since being sent down to the minor leagues on July 27th. He was named International League Player of the week for August 10-16th. During that time he went 1-1 with a .64 ERA in two starts.

The other option appears to be Brad Bergesen who has gone 15-4 in AA Bowie. There was speculation the Orioles might shy away from calling up the righty because the Baysox are making a playoff push.

Andy McPhail put an end to that train of thought yesterday by saying, "Bowie is here to serve Baltimore."

It's hard to speculate with these kinds of moves. When Chris Waters was called up in early August to get the start against the Angels, nobody predicted he would be the guy. His name wasn't on the media's radar, but as Dave Trembley said, "He was on our radar."

Amber,

And...that's what makes this game fun to watch. The uncertainty just adds an element of suspense that can be exciting at times.

I know I shouldn't speak ill of the media if that's the job I'm looking to go into, but...speculation is almost a 24/7 thing for those there. Don't have the info? Let's talk about what we think, give what we call "expert" analysis (pretty much based only on past statistics), and do this all the way up until the info is made public. Some outlets even go a step further to have two people and make them disagree with each other about what's going to happen. I suppose that makes it interesting, but in almost any instance, you could make a case for each side of the story; why it's better to use "this guy" instead of "that guy".

I mean no disrespect to you all in the media, but that's what's happening here. In a way, I suppose it has to, or there would be no pre-game or post-game shows out there, and that's for ANY sport. As for the pitchers, a case can be made for anyone out there, and watch: a pitcher whose name never even came up in the conversation will end up starting. (Sometimes, I think that teams do that intentionally just to mess with us). I think that would be the part of the job I'd find difficult. One thing I have learned is that in the business, you have to be objective...but to some, that looks like you're straddling the fence, which may also make you appear to not know what you're talking about.

As for Andy McPhail, that was wrong for him to say that. Yes, he's right, but don't we want support for all our minor teams also? Don't they bring in fans as well? To me, that's just a tad disrespectful to pretty much say, "Oh well" to the fact that Bowie is making a playoff push. Yes, they're here to serve Baltimore, but if I were a fan of Bowie, I'd have a real problem with that. Especially if there are pitchers available elsewhere that we can use.
