The contract (updated)
| | Comments (7)

The major league portion of Brian Matusz's contract runs from 2009 to 2013 and includes a $3.2 million signing bonus.

The contract breaks down in payments of $425,000, $500,000, $550,000, $650,000 and $700,000. So we're looking at a maximum total of $6.025 million.

Because it's a split contract that includes a separate minor league salary, Matusz is guaranteed $3,472,5000, including the bonus. The big bucks come once he's in the majors.

Memo to my bosses at MASN: I was told there would be no math.

Question.

Do you know what his salary is if he is in the minor leagues? That is much appreciated since you gave the split for if he is in the majors.

He would make 272,000 over the 5 years if he isnt in the majors? So does that break down equally into $55,000 a year if he is in the minors?

I'm assuming - and you know what happens when you assume - that it's broken down equally. I'm only sure of the total. And I've updated that poor entry about 12 times in five minutes, changing the wording around to make it clearer. I need a break. - Roch

A break is well deserved.

I appreciate all of the information you are able to pass along and am glad that you cover the Orioles because I don't know of any other "reporter" that covers their team as well as you do!

You made MASN a million times better!

Much appreciated. Thanks. I'm taking you with me for my next contract negotiation. - Roch

I know how you feel, Roch. I am not that good with math, and everytime I have to calculate, I usually get the numbers wrong, but sometimes I just get lucky. Like my guess of Matusz's signing, I think I should go to Vegas?

Can he play quarterback?

Isn't giving a draft pick a ML contract counter-productive when the O's are trying to build through the minors? Will next seasons top pick get a ML contract too and so on and so forth?

"I was told there would be no math." Nice Chevy Chase/SNL reference. It'll never get old.

Roch - Once Matusz reaches the majors, would he become a free agent after the 2013 season if the O's didn't re-sign him? Or does the contract change once he becomes a major leaguer?

Can I start naming state capitals? OK, seriously, he needs six years of major league service time before he's a free agent. - Roch
