This is why Cherry in eighth
| | Comments (9)

Closer George Sherrill wasn't available tonight because he couldn't get loose while warming up before the game and complained of some tightness in his left shoulder.

His absence had a ripple effect.

Jim Johnson was the designated closer tonight - or the guy who would pitch the ninth inning in a close game. That meant Rocky Cherry would pitch the eighth, a role that he was informed of earlier in the day.

Sherrill, Jamie Walker, Fernando Cabrera and Lance Cormier weren't available.

This is why I want to see Mickolio or another effective reliever. Our starters burn out the bullpen, and likewise, when the bullpen burns out the whole team.

Ripple effect. It's more like a bomb.

Thank you for the explanation.

I went a little too bonkers in the last post.

But remember, fan is short for fanatic.

Hey Roch,

I saw Johnson in the dugout without his hat on in the dugout after he was taken out. He looks like Ben Affleck to me. What is his nickname on the team?

Sherrill's pitching motion is going to cause him serious injury at some point. He reverse rotates where his back faces home plate before he releases the ball and it seems those type of pitchers don't last long.

Roch- Honestly, are you a Trembley fan? Or either way, no likee, no hatee?
I am not a fan. I am glad Joe Girardi is "losing" because I think he would have had a longer rope with the O's then he will with New York.
Everyone wants to see what Bergesen and Hernandez can do. They have better numbers then any pitchers we have had in a long time.
Instead we see Water's and will see Mitchell. Guys that are career minor leaguers. Us fans have not had much to look forward to the last decade. These guys have been in the minors for 4 and 5 seasons now.
Any thoughts about the KID GLOVE treatment?

Roch, this is completely off topic, I realize, but it would be great if your blog had a way of easily clicking and then going from one entry to the next (much like they had at the top of your previous blog). Under the current format it seems that after reading an entry I have to go back to the "archive" and then I can only read a list of partial entries. Any way of making this new one, as they say, a tad more user friendly?

Went to the game last night. Arrived early, around five. Standing in a line of several hundred fans waiting to get in, it was incredible how many were dressed in Sox attire. I would say 9o%. It was so bad that the tickettaker said to us, "Orioles fans . . . . Nice to see you!"

Looking around the stadium during the game my friend and I both agreed that they had to be very close to 43,000 fans at the game. The only empty areas in the stadium were the far corners in the upper deck of both right and left field.
As we left the stadium I commented to my friend that it was odd to go to a game an not hear the attendance for the game being announced. Usually they play the "quess the attendance" game in the 7th or 8th inning.

Last Thursday on the Anita Marks show, you'll recall Roch that the Orioles Rep that she had on the show mentioned that their were about 10,000 tickets remaining for last night's game. Knowing that the stadium holds 48,000 and the announced attendance was 40 some thousand that means that with the Red Sox in town and the O's coming off a very good road trip that the team only sold 2,000 more tickets from Thursday til Monday. What's the average walk up sales for a game? Would be interesting to know.

Of course, tonight's crowd will be close to a sellout and arrive very early increasing greatly the concession sales. How convenient.

As much as I would prefer to see the O's finish close to .500, I think the club's better interests will be served if our minor-leaguers continue to experience success where they are than getting lit up by pitching in MLB this season. That's particularly true of the guys at Bowie. Wouldn't the club's long-term interests be well-served by letting these guys collectively make the playoffs than to serve them up here? Further, success in the minors is no guarantee of how they'll perform in MLB. Liz, who was last seen in Balto. getting booed as he left the field was the International League's Pitcher of the Week last week in Norfolk. He's better off continuing to succeed there this year.

Of course, if the O's bullpen continues to get overworked, the club may be required to bring up some of these guys. I just hope it's not done as a discretionary move. Remember that 2008 is a rebuilding year; we don't want to be rebuilding two years from now!

Ray, you obviously don't go to many games...they haven't played 'guess the attendance' the entire 2008 season.

You're right though, it's all a ploy by ARAMARK to sell another 500 hot dogs.
