Tight ends back in the mix
In what is surely welcome news for head coach John Harbaugh, both of his top tight ends, Todd Heap and Daniel Wilcox, are back on the field after working their way back from injuries.
Heap, who missed most of last season with a hamstring injury, strained his calf during training camp and has been limited since then. The two-time Pro Bowler has returned to the practice field but is taking things slow to avoid re-injury.
"You've got to be smart with how you handle things," Heap said. "At this point, you don't want any setbacks, so that's in the back of your mind, but at the same time, when you're out there you've got to be going full speed, there's no other way to do it."
"I'm still learning [how to deal with injuries]. I definitely learned some lessons last year trying to battle a hamstring. You have to let it heal before you get out there, so you have to be smart about it."
Heap will likely sit out this Saturday's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams, but expects to be ready to go by the Sept. 7 regular season opener.
Wilcox has been recoverring from offseason toe surgery, and finally was able to practice for the first time on Monday. The six-year veteran says he's about 90 percent now, and expects to see time during the final preseason game, and barring a setback, should be ready by the opener against the Cincinatti Bengals.
