Updating the draft
| | Comments (11)

I know many of you are curious about the number of draft picks signed by the Orioles, so here's an update:

The club has locked up 33 of its 50 selections - though not literally, because I'm pretty sure there are laws against it.

The Orioles haven't reached terms with five of the top 25 picks, including first-rounder Brian Matusz, though scouting director Joe Jordan is flying to San Diego today to meet with the left-hander and his agent, Marc Agar.

Also unsigned are third baseman Chris Herrmann (10th round), left-hander Keith Landers (18th), left-hander Jarrett Martin (19th) and catcher Xavier Lopez (25th).

Roch, any word on Kevin Brady?

The fans finally seem to have a little hope in their front office, with the Tejada and Bedard trades. If we fail to sign our number one pick, it will be a serious black eye.

The question everyone wants answered is:

Will the Orioles be able to sign him, or won't they?

Where do all of these players go anyway? So many get drafted but there isn't that many spots in the minors is there?

When Matuz makes his major league debut for the O's in 2010, are they going to break out K.C. and the Sunshine Band?

Nice to see Hoes and Avery hitting well in the GCL and another of the draft picks 4-0 at Aberdeen. What's the scoop on Garabaz Rosa? 6'2, 19 yo shortstop hitting .336 with 3 dingers and 20 rbi in 33 games in the GCL. With apologies to Blake Davis, could we actually have a viable SS in the pipeline?

Here you go:

Norfolk - 27 players
Bowie - 32 players
Frederick - 29 players
Aberdeen - 34 players
Delmarva - 29 players
Bluefield - 35 players
VSL - 26 Players (Venezualean Summer League)

Let's just hope that Lou Montanez can enjoy the same kind of success he had at Bowie in the majors. Because as we know, we really need a fresh face and a fresh bat (one that has great power but isn't tainted with cork).

My question to you, Roch, is the over/under on Water's innings and runs tonight.

I'm guessing he'll go 5 innings and give up 3 runs. It's been that typical start for all of the starters anyway.

I just keep hoping to see a week where all of our starters go at least 7 innings and only give up a run or less. I know that's not asking much but it would make for a heck of a gift!

Sounds like it's as clear as something can be from someone who seems to be wearing coke bottle specs. Personally I thought the ninth inning comeback looked like a whole lot of effort to me.

All I'm saying is that our offense is doing their part. I mean, all of our pitchers last night constantly let the bottom third of the order do damage. That's not supposed to be the case. Remember Andy MacPhail's mantra, "Pitching, pitching, pitching"? Well, where is that? I don't see the call-ups of our best pitchers such as Bergerson, Berken, etc. Let them show us what they can do and replace Olson, Sarfate, Cabrera.

Bottom line, I'm sick of seeing the same pitchers go through their same acts every time, except for Guthrie. Guthrie is the only one who has grasped the concept of pitching. Everybody else just seems lost and is trying to pitch their own way. Heck, even the minor league pitchers are doing A LOT better than the major league pitchers! That should tell you something.

On average, what percentage of draft picks usually get signed by teams in a given year?

Roch, what happened to Billy Rowell? Is he in Single-A? He was supposed to be the future thirdbaseman. I think though that Mike Costanzo will take over that role.

Rowell had a lousy first half, then started to hit. He's still a prospect, and he's still very young. Don't give up on him yet - though he might end up at a different position. - Roch

Kev Brady actually was offered to sign in the 3rd round by the BoSox if he would take the slotted bonus and sign right away. After the night to think about it, he declined and becasue of signability issues he slipped to the 44th round. Highly doubt he would sign with the orioles instead of take the scholarship at clemson. I hope the kid does well he is a former teammate of mine. Hes a good kid and works extremely hard. If the orioles can draft him in three years they got a good player

Is it me? Or was he short-arming the ball?
btw....this site isn't remembering my "personal info."
