And the final
Double-A Bowie's first game in the Eastern League playoffs since 1997 ended with a 6-5, 12-inning loss to Akron.
Game 2 is tonight at Prince Georges Stadium, with Brad Bergesen taking the mound for the Baysox.
Akron's Matt LaPorta, part of the CC Sabathia trade with the Brewers, delivered the tie-breaking run with a single in the top of the 12th, his fourth hit and RBI on the night.
Bowie rallied in the bottom half, getting a leadoff walk by Matt Wieters and two-out single by Sebastien Boucher. But it wasn't quite enough.
The Baysox outhit the Aeros, 12-11, but couldn't outscore them.

Will any of these games be televised?

Not that I've heard, though it would be nice if tomorrow's game appeared on the airwaves, with the Orioles being off. - Roch
Roch, were you able to make it to the game in person? Or were you hitting constantly in your browser on the play-by-play page on milb.com like I was? ;-)
Circumstances permitting... I will be at any games played here in Akron. Maybe I will once again sit amongst the Nolan Reimold Fan Club! Akron does seem to lose when I am in attendance. Similarly, my attendance also has those effects on the Orioles. Luckily, it being September and all, it won't matter when I make the trip to The Yard next week when the Tribe is in town.
I may invest in some of the MASN $1 tickets and just hang out on the RF porch. With beverage. I figure, a buck a ticket... more $$$ for beer? Any local recommendations for hotel accomodations? Or even what parts of town to stay away from? Hotels.com etc does not exactly list "girls who travel alone should never stop here due to swarthy old men who creep the hallways" or "scenic view of crack house" or even "featured on 'Forensic Files'!" as much as they should.
Roch,
Now that you're not in that pressure cooker that is a daily newspaper and you have all this free time on your hands. :o Have you ever thought of putting together a list of all the Orioles pitchers that have been "down and out" for a significant period (maybe going back to Kris Benson)? I was reading an article on Bob McCrory and he was quoted in the article as saying it was one of the most difficult times of his career and it just seemed I had read that quote (or something similar) all too often from an O's pitcher. It would be interesting to compare that list to a similar one for the Yankees & Red Sox. The Yankees can point to Pavano and Wang and Joba as recent examples of injuries to their major league staff but I bet this is one area where we beat them in terms of breadth and depth, if not cumulative salary.
It just seems like the O's are particularly hard hit with problems and their margin of error is a lot thinner then the dreaded Yanquis.
I believe wnav.com is broadcasting live coverage on their website (1430 in Annapolis, but hard to receive over the airwaves sometimes).
Saturday's game will also be broadcast by the Akron radio announcers, and will be online at sportsradio1350.com.
I was unable to try tonight, tho, so I may be wrong...
Game tonight at PG Stadium was interesting. My main observations were as follows:
Ball was flying tonight, especially early. Besides all the HRs there were a ton of warning track flyouts.
I think Bowie had 14 Ks? The strikeouts were coming left and right.
Wieters was neutered. I think he had 5 at bats, was intentionally walked once and led off the inning 3 times (coming up with no baserunners to drive in obviously)
Akron threw a plethora of lefties at Bowie. I hope tomorrow's starters go deep because the bullpens are hurting. Sound familiar?
Number 28 (Wagner?) for Akron threw the last three innings. He shut Bowie down. His fast ball was consistently 93 to 96 and didnt need to change speeds. He might have thrown 3 pitches in three innings that were 90 or lower. He was truly dominant.
Birken looked good when he kept the ball in the stadium.
Fans were, to put it mildly, on the umpire's case all night. There were some bad calls at first base for each team. The umpire at home actually turned a couple times to gesture at the guy next to me who was riding the blue mercilessly. The Baysox staff was visibly upset with the home plate ump, including the pitching coach who was tossed for something he said. I heard some interesting comments from the Bowie dugout but they did not get on the ump in an over the top manner. Brad asked once or twice "Mark, where was that?" but not in an accusatory manner.
An Akron player (2B Pinkney) was hit immediately after a teammate went deep. He left the game in obvious pain and came back from the clubhouse with his wrist wrapped. The Akron bench erupted at the Bowie pitcher, Casadiego. The home plate ump, Mark Lollo, appeared to be talking to Casadiego, either to issue a warning or to calm him down and keep him from gesturing at the akron bench and Bowie pitching coach went out and said something to ump. ump respondd and whatever came next out of pitching coach Mike Griffin's mouth got a quik "Yer outta here" gesture from the home plate ump. I was sitting in the second row by the dougout but still am not sure exactly what happened.
FWIW, the handout at the game called for Hernandez tomorrow, not Bergesen and I think if I remembr correctly, followed by Tillman and then Bergesen. Roch, your info might correct, I am just passing along what the handout said.
IMO Wagner and LaPorta were the stars of the game. For the Sox, Tucker looked good at the plate and Blake Davis had a very weak looking o'fer. Reimold's homer wasa a shot but he left runners on base too. Of course we all wanted to see Wieters bring some heroics but he didnt come up with baserunners so was neutered somewhat. I was impressed by Birken but he was taken deep too many times. Casadiego gutted his way through a couple innings effectively if not artistically.
I was puzzled by managing so conservatively a few times. With no outs and one on, behind by one, the Sox played for one run asking hitters to bunt, including power hitters like Reimold. They basically played for the tie instead of the win. FWIW, Reimold laid down a nice bunt when asked.
Akron played some severe shifts which we were unable to take advantage of usually, although Wieters did line one through the hole when SS was playing him almost up the middle.
Fans had fun with names in particular on the Akron roster. S. Head was too good to pass up and Carlos Santana drew many reuests for Oye Como Va and Black Magic Woman.
More after tonight's game
Is anybody thinking they're glad LaPorta won't be in our division when he gets to the majors?
