Cristian Guzman named NL Co-Player of the Week
National's shortstop Cristian Guzman was named National League Co-Player of the Week for the week of August 25-September 1. The Reds Bronson Aaroyo was named the co-recipient.
Guzman joins Willie Harris as the second Washington National to win the award this season. Two other Nationals shared the honor. First baseman Nick Johnson was co-winner on June 6, 2005, shared with Cardinal Albert Pujols and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman earned the honor on August 5, 2007, shared with Diamondback Brandon Webb.
On Thursday against the Dodgers, Guzman hit for the cycle for the first time in his career. He also became the first DC-based player to hit for the cycle in the Nation's Capital. Guzman's cycle was the second in the history of the Washington Nationals; Brad Wilkerson accomplished the feat on April 6, 2005 at Philadelphia. He was, at the time, just the third player to hit for the cycle this season. Atlanta's Mark Kotsay and Minnesota's Carlos Gomez were the other two.
Guzman's efforts helped the Nationals go a perfect 6-0 on the week. Washington swept 3-game series from Los Angeles and Atlanta. He notched 6 multi-hit efforts in as many games last week.
For the week, Guzman ranked among NL leaders in hits, an MLB best 16; batting average, an MLB best .552; doubles, tied for seventh with three; RBI tied for 10th with six; total bases, third with 24; and slugging percentage, fourth at .828.
