Crow on Adam Jones
O's batting coach Terry Crowley must feel like a teacher with the school year coming to an end. He only has a few days left to work with and teach one of his prize pupils, Adam Jones.
Jones is completing his first season in an O's uniform. Despite missing most of August with a broken foot, the Birds' 23-year-old center fielder has had a fine first season in Baltimore. In 128 games, he's batting .272-9-57. Crowley is most pleased with his progress.
"As an organization, we know we have our center fielder for the next ten years or so. Going into spring we knew he had the tools, but could he maintain a good batting stroke day after day against lefties and tough righties? Could he cut down on his strikeouts some. We haven't even asked him yet to hit for power. He has such a good stroke and waits on the ball so well, he'll fit in our outfield for a long time to come."
Crowley can see some similarities between Jones now and Nick Markakis in his first O's season.
"They are both good young players; they both show you power; they both use the whole field. Both are outstanding defensive players. Some clubs would be happy to have them out there for their defense alone. That's a big cornerstone of our organization."
