Did you know...?
Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis goes into tonight's game with 105 runs scored and 96 walks. He's trying to become only the second 100/100 player in franchise history.
I was surprised to find out, through the club's PR department, that it hasn't happened more often.
If I challenged you to name the other player with 100 runs and 100 walks in the same season, who would you choose?
Answer to follow.
Sugar Ray Leonard and Dominique Dawes have been added to the list of sports stars with local ties who will join the Babe Ruth Museum for its tribute to Jim McKay on November 1st. Michael Phelps, Dorothy Hamill and Bert Sugar already were confirmed.
"A Champions' Tribute to Jim McKay," will take place on from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the new Hilton Hotel on W. Pratt St. in downtown Baltimore. It will begin with a VIP reception at Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, followed by a gala at The Hilton.
The event will include special tributes to McKay, a silent auction, food stations and open premium bar. Sponsorship opportunities for the gala range from $2,500 to $40,000, and tickets are offered to members of the Babe Ruth Museum for $150 and non-members for $175.
More information is available by visiting www.BabeRuthMuseum.com or calling 410.727.1539, ext. 3013.
Double-A Bowie opens the 2009 season with a seven-game road trip, beginning April 8 at Akron. The Baysox have one homestand during the first month, vs. Akron on April 16-19 and Erie on April 20-22.
OK, here's your answer: Albert Belle scored 108 runs and drew 101 walks in 1999. He also snarled at reporters 101 times and cursed at them 99 times, narrowly missing another milestone.

Ahh... the memories of a relic of the past....
Uh, I don't think so.
While Belle slugged home runs, he also slugged people. That doesn't really endear yourself to the fans or the team. I guess that's why we don't remember him anymore.
I have question that is unrelated to the recent post. My question is this - is it wrong to cheer for the Rays against the O's to keep the Red Sox from winning the division?
I hate to cheer against the O's, but at the same time, sure would be nice to see someone other than Yanks/Sox take the AL East...
Roch-
How do I break this to you gently? Last night on your network, Gary Thorne and Buck Martinez spoke for an entire Markakis AB about the 100/100 thing and mentioned that Joey Belle was the other Oriole to do it.
Ricky Henderson?
Oh wait, franchise history. No wonder there's so few.
I like reading.
I recall a story where Joey Belle responded to a kid who told the disgruntled one that it would make his day if Belle signed his glove..."I bet it would." said Belle as he walked away. Good times...good times.
Can you believe ESPN has the guts to send out WNBA playoff promos via email? I just got one.... I'd rather watch chess....
Bass... what happened to the promise of no Sept deals for a journeyman starter to fill the rotation the last month? Like last yrs elite bunch?
AL Belle was unfairly maligned by the fans of Baltimore. The taunts that he had to endure by some unruly fans were not handled properly by him, but I bet if Nick Markakis had to daily receive the kinds of comments that Albert did, he wouldn't be such a fan favorite either. You press people ought to be able to look behind what caused Belle to do so poorly here with the Orioles instead continuing this foolishness. It is so unfair to the man. He left here bitter and I for one don't blame him because he received no support. The news perpetuated and exacerbated the problem with accusatory comments and questions.
Roch, I have respect for you. Are you aware of the incidents that set him off here?
How many 100 RBI and 100 Walk players have we had and how many 100 RBI and 100 runs scored players have we had in history???
It was Albert Bell in 1999.
