Johnson done for year
Game 1 has been postponed because of rain. Daniel Cabrera is scheduled to start Game 2.
The Orioles expect to play the nightcap. Good thing the field drains so well.
Pitcher Jim Johnson said his MRI revealed fluid in his right shoulder that's causing the inflammation, and some "wear and tear," and it's been recommended that he shut down for the final month.
Johnson stopped short of saying he has a torn labrum, and stressed that every pitcher has some sort of tear in "some part of their arm." He doesn't regard it as anything serious.
"It's definitely disappointing to not finish the season healthy, but it's good news that it's not something that's serious. I guess you take the good news with the bad," he said.
"It's wear and tear, inflammation, little stuff here and there. The doctors and the trainers were telling me that it's just something that's going to take a couple weeks of treatment and recovery."
Remember the good ol' days, when everyone had a strained oblique?
Doctors have suggested that Johnson rest and come back strong in spring training - though he has no idea in what role. He said it doesn't matter whether he starts or relieves.
Johnson has dealt with inflammation in the past, though not recently.
Omir Santos would have been behind the plate in Game 1. Brandon Fahey would have started at shortstop.

Guess this doesn't offer much hope to the concept of Johnson being a starter. I don't know how many innings he's pitched this season, but I'm sure it wasn't nearly the amount a starter logs.
Hey Roch,
Can you give us an idea of the real attendance number tonight? I'm guessing between 2500 and 4000, but they will announce it as 10500.
This being the first "Omir" in O's history. I prefer not to think about the "Omar" of 2003....4-11 with a 6.34.
I have a ball autographed by C "Yamid Haad," from when he was a Portland Beaver. I have no idea how I got it. I didn't ask him for it. It didn't sell at my last garage sale. I don't think I'm going pay to get it authenticated.
Wonder if a ball autographed by the 2008 Baysox will be worth something in the future.
These are the things you think about when you've got a team that starts all relievers and you're watching it swirl like water down the drain. Or in the toilet.
Simon is big. He is a starter. He's got Dave Johnson stuff. I want to see Romero and Reimold and Davis [ our next SS a Pedroia twin ]after Bowie gets done. But no, Trem will have none of that.
for whom are the walks more painful: us, the fans; the coaching staff; the orioles offense???
i'm stuck between the coaches and the offense. me, as a fan, i can simply flip the channel off and let the kids play guitar hero. watching my 5 year old rock out to "paranoid" by sabbath is far more entertaining than 5 bases loaded walks!!! however, i digress and think i'm leaning toward the coaches, because the offense can at least look at some nice stats, and feel good about THEIR season. though, i'm sure there is frustration with losing EVERY DAY!! and so kranitz and trembley, i think, die the most.
At a certain point, don't the trainers and pitching coaches bear some responsibility? No we know why we picked up Bass for a bag of balls. Unfortunately, that's all he has given the Orioles in return.
Can we please not use the phrase "ran out of gas" unless you are referring to a pitcher who just came out of HS or college? No one in this organization throws more than 5 1/3 innings anyway. Strength, conditioning, and mechanics seem to be an area of considerable concern. Maybe if we didn't throw so many balls the team could face 200 or so batters less per season! Injuries also continue to occur because half of the relievers and nearly all of the starters are failures leading to overuse of the few effective pitchers.
As for the overall record, most of us came down in the 68-74 range before the season started. It looks like we were being homers. For a while I was really excited to be near 75+.
It's going to take a while to get to the 100,000 million mark at Camden Yards again (both fans and payroll).
