Just as we suspected
Jeremy Guthrie's struggles over his last two starts apparently can be traced to a tired arm.
Manager Dave Trembley told reporters during his pre-game talk that Guthrie's turn will be skipped, and the Orioles will go bullpen-by-committee to piece together tomorrow's assignment. Lance Cormier might want to start loosening up his arm.
Not exactly an ideal arrangement when facing the Boston Red Sox, but could it be much worse than what we've seen from the real starters?
Guthrie is risking serious injury by trying to keep his velocity up. Better to sit him down.

I thought we were already basically doing each start as "bullpen by committee".....the designated started just gets to go 2 or three innings(if he can last that long) instead of just one

Good point! - Roch
not sure that 65 wins mark is out of reach after all... feel better Guthrie! You are one of the few reminders of what good starting pitching looks like. please pray for the rest of this staff.
Really they should be going bullpen by committee from here on out. I'd rather have Johnson or Cherry on the mound than Brian Burres or Daniel Cabrera.
Why risk Guthrie's arm at all at this point? The manager says he'll make his next start. Guy already is past his previous total innings pitched in a season. Shut him down.
Utter bull####!
Ramon was safe on that call! Why does the umpires always screw the Orioles?
It was not even that close! Varitek's arms were like a mile apart from Ramon's hand. Why can't replay cover this kind of play?
Jeez!
Really, can the umpiring in baseball get any worse. Maybe managers should be allowed to throw the red flag once every game.
If nothing else maybe Ramon got a good lesson on how to block the plate.
So Liz walks the bases loaded so he can get to David Ortiz? Man this is getting old. Can't these guys find the plate or do they not have the cajones to pitch at the major league level?! I refuse to believe the umpiring is this bad!
this guy Liz is driving me nuts. who the hell thinks it's a good idea to pitch around the two hitters in front of Ortiz? His he stupid or is he just not capable of throwing strikes?
And of course... right after it looks like Ramon actually hustled and got the "first" run, he goes and unleashes a typical Ramon throw and let the guy steal second and then Liz lets them score.
Morons.
I'm so happy we won't see them next year.
laughable as usual, wake me up next march

please... please.... please tell us that Andy MacPhail is looking for pitchers in the off-season. Free agents and all.
This is just getting too pathetic and stupid. If you ever read this blog, Andy, please find a way to get in the race for AJ Burnett, CC Sabathia, Sheets, or whoever is out there. Because this is purely going nowhere with the pitchers we have in this rotation AND bullpen.
I don't care if you need to bring up a few Bowie starters. Just find some people that don't have their name of Cabrera, Liz, Burres, Olson, Cabrera, and whoever else.
If there was a time to listen, this is the time. Definitely.
Yes the umpire blew the call, but it had little impact on the outcome of this game. I cannnot believe they won't consider bringing up Wieters with Ramone phoning it in the way he is.
Wow do we need pitching or what? Without Guthrie, can we just forfeit the rest of the season? We'd improve out ERA thru forfeiting.
I have an idea....
Why don't the Orioles just pick out 9 pitchers per night... in any order and have each of them pitch one inning only? What do you think Roch?
I mean it really couldn't get much worse...could it?

You think 9 will be enough? - Roch
Please tell what happen to the pitching from 1970 to 2008. Did Palmer have a sore arm after 305 inning pitched with 17 complete games? Did Palmer make the amount of money that Guthie is making? I don't think so. Dave do the fans a favor and send your current staff ti Norfolk and bring up all the pitcher from Norfolk to finish the year.
I say let J Johnson get the start. Trembley doesn't have a clue how to use the guy properly. He goes from pitching virtually every single night with growing fears that he will be worked until his arm falls off to getting in about once a week. Surely he can go 5 or 6. He was a starter his entire career and has pitched entirely as a reliever this year. Im sure he's dying to start anyway. Lights out out of the 'pen and he's probably well aware that an average starter makes more than some of the top relievers. Give the kid a shot. Can't be worse than any of the other trainwrecks Trembley has shoved out there. Season is nearly over and this is the time of year when the young guys audition for next year. 6 innings won't set him back.
Joba Johnson time.
Can someone explain to me what happened to big league bullpens that actually got people out while stranding inherited runners? And while you're at it, can you point out something from the '08 season that would indicate that Trembley and Kranitz know anything at all about running a pitching staff? I'm a patient man, but that Wednesday debacle in Boston has sent me over the edge. After an entire summer of watching Jamie Walker make a fool of himself on the mound, it would seem that the Trembley/Kranitz duo would have thought about using another of the +/- 100 men they have in the bullpen. It's almost like they wanted to prove again to themselves that Walker stinks. In addition to giving Walker a bus ticket out of town when the team gets home, they should let Trembley and Kranitz accompany him. We can certainly do without him and, considering the way things have gone with the pitching this year, we can do without them as well. No manager and no pitching coach for the remainder of the season can't be any worse than what we have going for us now.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with either Trembley or Kranitz. You can't judge either of these guys on just one year. I don't care how good of a "coach/manager" you are if you don't have the talent in front of you then you have nothing to manage. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the coaching. They can say a lot of things to help these guys but if they don't or can't do what's asked of them then it doesn't matter how good the coaches are. They're working with a lot of young arms that quite frankly are so good. Take D-Cab for example, so far nobody's been able to get through to him in over 5 years. You definitly can't blame the pitching coach on that one. Let's wait to judge their progress in the 2010 season when they should have some actual talent in the rotation. Did you really think that after last seasons' melt down the only thing we needed was a better pitching coach? The last two years we had Mazzone, who was credited with molding Atlanta's stellar rotation in the 90's. If only we had Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz to make Kranitz look like a genius.
Instead of looking at the failures, and I agree it's hard to watch right now, take a look at Sherrill, Johnson and Guthrie. Sherrill had never closed before and has done a great job this year and last year Johnson wasn't half the pitcher he is today. Do we credit Kranitz and Trembley for their success or blame Mazzone for not getting through to Johnson last year? Guthrie also had no success until he came here. Was it the change of scenery, a lightbulb going off or was it the coaching?
