Nationals SS Cristian Guzman Named NL Co-Player of the Week by MLB
Cristian Guzman was named NL Co-Player of the Week in the last 20 minutes. He shares the award with CIN's Bronson Arroyo. The MLB release is attached above.
*Guzman becomes the third Washington National to share the weekly citation, joining 1B Nick Johnson (June 6, 2005, shared with STL's Albert Pujols) and 3B Ryan Zimmerman (August 5, 2007, shared with ARI's Brandon Webb). Willie Harris won the NL POTW award outright on July 21, 2008.
*On Thu. vs. Los Angeles (NL), Cristian hit for the cycle for the first time in his career. He also became the first DC-based player to hit for the cycle in the Nation's Capital. Guzman's cycle was the 2nd in the history of the Washington Nationals (Brad Wilkerson, April 6, 2005 at PHI). He was (at the time) just the 3rd player to hit for the cycle this season (ATL's Mark Kotsay and MIN's Carlos Gomez).
*Cristian's efforts on the week helped the Nationals go a perfect 6-0 on the week. Washington swept 3-game series from LAD and ATL.
*Guzman notched 6 multi-hit efforts in as many games last week.
*For the week, Guzman ranked among NL leaders in hit (MLB-best 16), batting (MLB-best .552), doubles (tied for 7th, 3), RBI (tied for 10th, 6), total bases (3rd, 24) and slugging percentage (4th, .828).
