Nats fall 6-2 to Padres, drop 5th straight
Washington's offense didn't have an answer for Padres starter Cha Seung Baek and they wind up on the losing end of a 6-2 decision. The loss, their fifth in a row, gives San Diego the series sweep and a 5-1 record against the Nationals' this season.
Baek, who gave up one run on five hits in seven innings and improved to 6-10, out-pitched Odalis Perez. Perez matched a career-high with 11 strike outs, but he allowed three runs on five hits. The loss drops Perez to 7-11 on the season.
The Padres jumped on Perez in the first and never looked back. With one out, Edgar Gonzalez singled and his brother Adrian doubled him to third. Kevin Kouzmanoff followed with a two-run double for the 2-0 lead.
The Nationals' had a chance to get on the board in the second when Lastings Milledge singled, moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kory Casto lined out to the pitcher and Alberto Gonzalez struck out, stranding Milledge.
Perez settled down after a two-out walk put runners on first and second in the second. He got a fly out and retired the next nine Padres before giving up a lead-off home run to Adrian Gonzalez in the sixth, giving San Diego the 3-0 lead. It was Gonzalez's 35th of the season.
Willie Harris led-off the fourth with a single and stole second, but that's as far as he would get. Ryan Zimmerman, Milledge and Elijah Dukes couldn't get the ball out of the infield.
Washington finally got to Baek in the sixth on Zimmerman's 13th home run of the season, making it a 3-1 game. It was his first long ball since he took Mike Hampton deep in Atlanta on September 6th.
The Nationals' bullpen couldn't keep the game close as the Padres score three times in the eighth to blow the game open.
Edgar Gonzalez reached on Zimmerman's throwing error, his 10th of the season. After a walk, Kouzmanoff doubled home Gonzalez for a 4-1 lead. Chase Headley followed with an RBI single to put San Diego up 5-1. They added a run on Nick hundley's sac fly for the five-run advantage.
Washington mounted a mini comeback in the home half of the inning, but it wasn't enough to put pressure on the Padres bullpen.
Pinch-hitter Ryan Langerhans, who hit a one-out single and moved to second on Willie Harris' base hit, scored on Zimmerman's single, his second RBI of the day.

Nick Hundley hit a fly ball to right that was caught by Elijah Dukes, but Dukes thought it was the third out. Kouzmanoff scored as Dukes started jogging towards the infield. He struck out the side after the homer and he has 11 on the afternoon, which matches his career high. Perez struck out 11 Phillies on April 30, 2003.

Perez thru 3 innings
Since the two-run first, Perez has settled down and looks to have found a rhythm. He's allowed two base runners, both in the second, but has avoided any damage.

Game Preview
San Diego (60-95) at Nationals (58-97)
Emilio Bonifacio's costly error, in the fifth, opened the door for three unearned runs and that's all the Padres would need to defeat the Nationals' 6-1.
San Diego starter Chris Young tossed seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball and he even helped his own cause, with his first career home run, in the seventh, to even his season record at 6-6.
Washington, who has lost four straight and dropped to 2-4 on their current nine-game homestand, looks to avoid getting swept by the Friars in the series finale.
Veteran Odalis Perez takes the bump for the Nationals while the Padres counter with Cha Seung Baek.
