P-Nats fall 6-4 in Game 2 of Mills Cup; series tied 1-1
One night after scoring 15 runs, blowing out Myrtle Beach and taking a 1-0 lead in the Mills Cup Finals, Potomac fell behind 6-0 and never recovered, falling 6-4, and now the best-of-five series is even, one game apiece.
Nationals' starter Jeff Mandel allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits in just 3 2/3 innings and put Potomac in an early hole they were never able to climb out of.
Travis Jones broke a scoreless tie in the second with a three-run homer off Mandel. Ernesto Mejia's solo blast put the Pelicans up 4-0 after three innings.
Potomac, who managed just three hits off Myrtle Beach starter Carlos Rivas in six innings, finally got on the board in the seventh when reliever Craig Kimbrel loaded the bases with one out.
Michael Martinez, who had two hits, hits a two-run single to make it a 6-2 game. Dee Brown's sac fly cut the Peilcans lead in half at 6-3. Jhonatan Solano's solo homer in the eighth made it a two run game, but that's as close as the P-Nats would get.
Wednesday is an off day as the two teams head to Potomac for games three and four beginning Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
Potomac sends LHP Ross Detwiler (8-8, 4.86) to face RHP Ryne Reynoso (10-6, .36). First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 7:00pm.
