Ravens, Orioles, Tides
The Jets need a quarterback, and they acquire someone whose bust will appear in Canton.
The Ravens need a quarterback, and they acquire a bust.
ESPN.com is reporting that the Ravens have agreed to terms with Joey Harrington, the third overall pick in the 2002 draft.
If true, he'll make a nice No. 3 quarterback once Troy Smith is healthy. Kyle Boller must be headed to IR.
Adam Jones comes off the disabled list and homers on the first pitch he sees. The kid is so much fun to watch.
Garrett Olson got into a nice groove after allowing back-to-back homers to Jason Varitek and Jeff Bailey in the second inning. The Red Sox didn't get another hit until the sixth, but two straight doubles tied the game, 3-3, and Coco Crisp's bloop single moved Boston ahead, 4-3.
Now Olson is gone, and the Orioles will have to be satisfied that he gave them 5 2/3 innings. The bar has been lowered, so it has the look and feel of a quality start, even though it isn't.
By the way, Bailey was the International League's Player of the Year with Triple-A Pawtucket.
Olson aggressively attacked the hitters since the second inning, forcing them to put the ball in play. That's exactly what manager Dave Trembley and pitching coach Rick Kranitz have been trying to get him to do since spring training.
Juan Castro has homered, singled and scored twice. As I've said before, the Orioles love his defense. They'd just like for him to hit a little, too, and the shortstop job could belong to him in 2009.
Triple-A Norfolk lost its final game tonight to Richmond, 9-3. Luis Hernandez, the Orioles' Opening Day shortstop, finished with a .185 average.

Ravens deny signing anybody. Numerous reports say they could sign both Simms and Harrington since Troy could be out 3 weeks.

Thanks for the update. - Roch
If the basic goal is to prepare these young players for the future, why doesn't Trembley let the starters try to get out of their own jams in the middle innings? Again tonight, Olson struggles in the 6th and is pulled. I think Trembley has done a good job with this team, but this is one place where I think he is making a mistake. Wouldn't Olson benefit more from going after Pedroia than by sitting on the bench and watching a relief pitcher do it. If he gets him out, it's a great confidence boost and it's still a one run game. Neither of the previous two batters hit the ball hard - Crisp had a bloop and Elsbury an infield hit.
Trembley has done this over and over this season. If this were a contending team, I would understand, but this is a last place team trying to improve for the future.
A special Gary Thorne moment since Ray brought up the topic and I'm paraphrasing: "How could Major League Baseball not have the Red Sox play the last series at Yankee Stadium? I can't believe it." This was during an O's telecast several months ago basically implying the O's-Yankees matchup wasn't fitting. That's what all those years at ESPN will do to someone. He actually believes that there is only one worthwhile matchup. I mean, who will bother watching baseball when the Yankees are eliminated?
I don't care about Ravens backup QBs-- Flacco will hold his own and guide the black birds to a solid but unspectacular 7-9 record.
This just in: Cliff Lee is good. CC Sabathia is also respectable.
WORST NFL QUARTERBACK EVER:
Here is a statistically based list of the worst NFL Quarterbacks EVER:
Player Name Value Career Attempts
Rick Mirer -2512 2043
Mike Phipps -2447 1799
Joey Harrington -2374 1802
Mike Phipps was an Art Modell choice and signaled the beginning of the end for the Browns as an elite team. So, we couldn't actually get the worst EVER, but we did snag the worst available. Good job guys...
Why wasn't Lou PHing in the 9th?
Hey Roch - I just found you again! I didn't know you started your own Blog over here. Anyway, isn't it time to renew Trembley - especially since it appears he has been set up to fail in September (although I confident it is not on purpose)...this last month should have nothing to do with his contract, don't ya think? I also think they need to get one of those 10 year contracts going with markakis.
So sick of Gary Thorne.
Fine, he doesn't like the Orioles. I get it. Still, could he at least mask his excitement for other teams a bit? Whether it's over the top excitement for an Arod homer, or being in love with the Red Sox, it's tiresome and distracting.
Tonight, after Millar's HR, he actually demanded a replay with a bit too much enthusiasm. I am disgusted by him.
It's after 4am and I can't sleep because someone sent me a useless bit of Millar "history" on youtube. If you've already seen this, then you feel my pain. It's the Kevin Millar version of a "celebrity sex tape"... but worse.

My. Burning. Retinas. Roch, can you please ask him to make sure this never happens again?
Roch,
I heard Adrian Beltre hit for the cycle, which reminded me that Erik Bedard is also a Mariner. What is the latest news with him? He is still on the DL with a sore shoulder – really???
