Tape-measure blasts, and the lineups
When the subject turned to longest home runs hit at Camden Yards, ignited by Luke Scott's blast last night onto Eutaw St., I was reminded of Pedro Munoz's shot that either landed in, or cleared, the visiting bullpen.
He's not first on the list, however. And Scott isn't in the Top 15.
With a major assist to Jay Moskowitz of the Orioles' PR staff, here it is:
Darryl Strawberry, 465 ft, June 17, 1998, off Mike Mussina
Pedro Munoz, 463 ft, May 25, 1996, off David Wells
Jeffrey Hammonds, 460 ft, Sept. 15, 1997, off Eric Plunk
Mo Vaughn, 457 ft, July 7, 1996, off Randy Myers
Eric Davis, 452 ft, Sept. 26, 1993, off Arthur Rhodes
Juan Gonzalez, 450 ft, July 26, 1992, off Mike Mussina
Manny Ramirez, 450 ft, Aug. 14, 1995, off Jamie Moyer
Brian Giles, 447 ft, July 26, 1996, off Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza, 447 ft, June 14, 2001, off Josh Towers
Ken Griffey Jr., 446 ft, Aug. 15, 1997, off Jimmy Key
Chili Davis, 445 ft, June 10, 1995, off Ben McDonald
Bill Haselman, 443 ft, April 27, 1997, off Armando Benitez
Jose Canseco, 443 ft, June 19, 1998, off Pete Smith
Harold Baines, 443 ft, July 17, 1999, of Dustin Hermanson
Aubrey Huff, 443 ft, Aug. 27, 2000, off Jay Spurgeon
Here's the Orioles' lineup:

Out of curiousity (and because it's never happened during a game), how long would a home run have to be to hit the warehouse? I feel like this is something I should already know...
Thanks.
Hi Roch -
Any chance Sal Fasano makes it into this series? Such a nice guy. Signed my Sal jersey. Yes, I have one. I may be the only person not named Fasano who does.
This list you have here is obviously from regular season games. However, I have heard on several occasions that the longest home run at Camden Yards was by Ken Griffey Jr at the homerun derby during the inaugural season of the ballpark ('93 season I guess it was). I've also heard that this homerun is the only one to actually hit the warehouse without bouncing (like Scott's did last night).
Any truth to this?

It's true about Griffey, but nobody counts it because it didn't happen in a game. - Roch
Roch
How far is the vsiting bullpen away from home plate... And isn't that high also...
And something else I liked the comment the jim hunter said during the game when he said that Nick Markakis was using the scoreborad like a green monster of Camden yards (long singles because of his arm) That's how we do it in BALTIMORE!!

We're estimating 440 feet. - Roch
Couldn't help but notice that only 3 (maybe 4 depending on which team Eric Davis was on at the time) of the top 15 were by Orioles. You would think just on mathmatical probability the O's would have 7 or 8. Pretty much sums it up though. Pretty sad.
Look at all those tape measure blasts from the lively ball era (1996-98)!!!
I'm so surprised to see Hafner back in the lineup with Akron still playing in the Eastern League championships.
In last night's 14-4 win, the Orioles "homered for the cycle" for the second time this year: hitting a grand slam (Aubrey Huff), a three-run homer (Adam Jones), a two-run homer (Ramon Hernandez) and a solo shot (Luke Scott). They also did it about a month ago, I think in the game when Adam Jones hit his grand slam. I have no idea, but would be willing to wager that this has happened fewer than 20 times in Orioles history, and never twice in the same year. Roch, can you get the Elias geeks to investigate this one??
Roch, I just looked it up, the Orioles also 'homered for the cycle' when they beat the Yankees 13-4 near the end of July, when the homers were hit by Adam Jones (4), Kevin Millar (3), Aubrey Huff (2), and Ramon Hernandez (1).
Actually, only 2 of the 15 were actually Orioles when the homerun was hit, the other 13 were given up by Oriole pitchers. Now to me this is unbelievable since we had people like Albert Belle, Cal Ripkin, Eddie Murray, Joe Carter, Huff recently, Tejada, Palmeiro, Alomar, Gibbons, among others. You would think some of these would have hit one more than 443 ft? I know some of these were past their prime, but still had power. I believe I had to have missed a couple of players too. Just surprises me.
Jay Spurgeon, now there's a name that doesn't come up much.
Notice how many of them were hit AGAINST the O's?
Strawberry's blast hit the big scoreboard on the fly.
Griffey's plaque on the warehouse says 445' so even though it hit it on the fly, its still only good for 11th longest at OPACY.
