The line on Bass
I hope Brian Bass makes the team next season for the fish references alone.
Bass threw 77 pitches in six innings, 54 for strikes. He allowed one run and three hits, walked none and struck out four.
His fastball was hitting 93 mph with regularity, at least from what I could see through the rain drops. The tarp's back on the field and we have another delay.
Jays manager Cito Gaston wasn't pleased with the umpires' decision to halt play after Lyle Overbay's leadoff double off reliever Lance Cormier.
And somewhere, Mike Mussina is warming up without his permission.

I missed the double by Overbay. As far as I am concerned , that was the absolute best time to call it. Cito can suck the water off the field if he wants to continue.
Yes, having Bass back next season will allow us to question whether Trembs was too quick with the hook.
Hey, why don't we stop in next door at Connolly's Bar right now and toast Brian with an ice cold Bass?

Connolly appreciated the reference. I just passed it along to him in the press box. - Roch
Did you see Bass' line in the 5th. 45 strikes and 17 balls. Other than Guthrie, when was the last time we saw that.
It's funny...as they were getting ready to start that inning, I was yelling from the UD for Cormier to stall so the Ump could call for the Rain Delay...I guess he didn't hear me in time...
Hi Roch -- A win is a win! When our bullpen cleared out, I figured the game was going to be called -- and that was like 9:20 -- then the Blue Jays bullpen decided to take a stroll, so that had to be the end. It's always entertaining to watch the tarp guys anyway!! Just kidding..... It was excellent just to have a game without our pitcher relinquishing walks. Our last game at the yard for the season -- said good-bye to everyone, including Danny the beer guy, even though I don't drink beer -- I just like Danny! On to the postseason without the O's -- maybe next year???
I went to the 2006 World Baseball Classic and am now making plans to go in March 2009 -- how about you, Roch? It was really cool....
Who's "City Gaston" Roch?? :p
Anyways, Bass had a great start and Kudos to him! Good for Brian to go out with a bang.
Lets go O's! Winning the only way possible - by removing 2+ innings from the bullpen's workload.
What about the connection to WJZ 13 man Marty Bass?
I have a question for Roch and the baseball historians out there: The White Sox could conceivably play four consecutive games on four different days against four different teams (Indians, Tigers, Twins, Rays). Has this ever happened in baseball before?

Bass seems like the long reliever we need to replace Albers, who figures to be in the rotation if healthy.
It would be even better if Bass could lure batters to swing on a nasty sinker... oh, these lines with get worse before they get better! Seriously though, unlike a lot of fans I like a guy who has some semblance of control even if he doesn't throw 98 mph. We need more "pitchers". I don't know if Bass is a long term answer but guys like Cabrera with good arms and no location or ability to field are not part of the solution. Also, keep in mind that Bass probably needed the first few starts as an extended spring training. He was not ready to go 6-7 when he got here. Why did DT expect it? That said, he could be a good 5. That means we have a #2 (Guthrie--no slight he is a very legitimate 2-man) and about 12 #5's.
I do like not heading into 2009 with a long losing streak. Yeah rain!!!
I think it's time for the Orioles to cut bait and hook this guy to a decent deal. Pay him to scale and everything should go swimmingly, otherwise he would every right to open his large mouth and fillet the front office.

turns out Bedard does not have a tear in his labrum.
